The Zhentarim
The Zhentarim, frequently referred to simply as the Zhent, Xhent, or Xhentarim, is an ancient order and guild of spies, thieves, and smugglers operating throughout the Sword Coast. Bound by secrecy and shadow, its agents infiltrate various levels of society to gather intelligence, traffic illicit goods, and influence local politics under their guiding maxim: “Knowledge is Power.” Historically viewed as a sinister force with a dark, sordid history, modern reformists within the guild—such as Lucian Nightshade—aim to rehabilitate its standing, recasting the Zhentarim as premier spies, smugglers, and diplomats.
The primary emblem of the guild, frequently carved into crates or painted on walls to mark safe houses and dead drops, is a stylized dragon swallowing a moon (often described as a dragon with its wing bent inward, holding a small moon in its mouth).
Historical Legacy
Though known today primarily for shadow operations, the guild’s history intersects with legendary heroics. Approximately 300 years ago, when the major cities of the Sword Coast—such as Luskan, Neverwinter, Waterdeep, and Baldur’s Gate—were first starting to emerge, a cooperative onslaught of chromatic dragons laid waste to much of the North. In response, the Lord’s Alliance was formed to repel the invaders, though Luskan chose to pay tribute to the beasts instead of resisting.
During this conflict, a legendary band of heroes arose to push the dragons back. Among them was Gorion of Candlekeep, a prominent Zhentarim member. Alongside allies like Elminster Aumar (the Sage of Shadowdale) and Lady Tanager Alagondar of Neverwinter, Gorion fought to repel the massive invasion, ultimately slaying the Green Dragon Virethas, the Jade Queen, outside Neverwinter. Gorion was later killed by Sarevok in the years that followed.
Political Influence and the Neverwinter Council
The guild’s operations extend directly into the highest echelons of localized governments. In Neverwinter, the Reformist chapter leader, Lucian Nightshade (also known as Lucien Nightstone), resides in a manor within the wealthy Blacklake District and successfully secured the official role of city Spymaster on Lord Nasher Alagondar’s small council at Castle Never.
However, this political height is deeply compromised. Lucian strongly suspects a spy on the council due to a compounding series of intelligence failures, including the Phandalin situation, the outbreak of the Wailing Death plague, the sudden emergence of the Cult of the Dragon, and Luskan landing forces behind Neverwinter’s lines.
The Great Schism and Factional Division
In the modern era, the Zhentarim is deeply fractured by a mounting internal schism. The organization has split into two opposing factions vying for the future of the guild:
- The Reformist Faction: Led by figures like Lucian Nightshade, Jamra Gleamsilver (referred to as “Jamrash” by some, who has mysteriously gone quiet in Waterdeep while claiming “all is well”), and the late Halia Thorton. This faction seeks to move away from the Zhentarim’s sordid history. Their goal is to rehabilitate the guild’s reputation, presenting them as sophisticated, premier spies, smugglers, and diplomats who operate primarily within the major cities of the Lord’s Alliance.
- The Violent Faction: Often described by its detractors as the “fascist faction of the Zhentarim,” this extremist branch is willing to forge dark alliances to secure power. Led by Nezznar the Spider, they aligned themselves with the Cult of the Dragon. Nezznar held immense contempt for the reformists, writing in his personal journal that “Thorton, Nightshade and Gleamsilver are against I imagine. Living so long among the Lord’s Alliance Great Cities has made them weak.” The mysterious faction leader known as The Pereghost is also associated with this faction.
Known Leadership and Faction Heads
Though the guild operates in the shadows, its influence spans several key domains across the Sword Coast:
- Lucian Nightshade (also known as Lucien Nightstone), overseeing reformist operations in Neverwinter.
- Nezznar the Spider, representing the extremist Underdark chapter until his death.
- Jamra Gleamsilver (who communicates using the initials J.G.), leading the reformist faction in Waterdeep.
- The Pereghost, a mysterious leader within the guild.
The Wailing Death and Erëvyn’s Recruitment
During the catastrophic outbreak of the Wailing Death plague in Neverwinter, the Zhentarim recruited one of its most pivotal modern agents: Erëvyn Sehahine (originally born Erëvan Sehahine). Born in the docks district to a human dockworker and an elven nurse, Erëvyn spent his youth exploring ships, listening to sailor stories, and climbing dock cranes at midnight. This fostered a passion for infiltrating hard-to-reach, secret places and observing cargo. He frequently noticed the “dragon swallowing a moon” symbol carved onto crates and walls throughout the city, though its origin remained a mystery to him.
When the plague struck and the city was quarantined, Erëvyn’s father lost his job, and his mother worked tirelessly to tend to the sick. To support his family and suffering neighbors, Erëvyn began lifting supplies from noble houses in the wealthy Blacklake district. During one such foray into a cellar, he uncovered a secret letter from Waterdeep marked with the dragon-and-moon symbol. Signed “J.G.”, the letter detailed a cure for the plague requiring four magical creatures that were en route to the city.
The owner of the estate, Neverwinter Zhentarim leader Lucian Nightshade, caught Erëvyn hiding in the rafters. Recognizing the youth’s talent, agility, and insatiable curiosity, Lucian took him under his wing. He trained Erëvyn in finding secrets, reading people, analyzing ledgers, and re-sealing letters, teaching him that “while money and jewels might have value, knowledge is the true power in the realm.”
A year later, Erëvyn overheard Sildar Hallwinter (a fixer and retired soldier for the Lord’s Alliance) and the dwarf Gundren Rockseeker discussing a monumental discovery (“something big”) and their plans to escort supplies to Phandalin. Erëvyn reported this to Lucian, who dispatched him on his first official Zhentarim mission: infiltrate Gundren’s expedition, investigate the situation in Phandalin, and report back.
The Phandalin Operation and Nezznar’s Defeat
In the northern region of the Sword Coast, the Zhentarim’s internal schism played out around the search for the legendary Spell Forge in Wave Echo Cave. Nezznar “the Spider,” a dangerous Drider, sought to claim the forge’s riches. He brokered a deal with the Cult of the Dragon and their emissary, a scaly “day-walker” known as the Jade Wyrmspeaker. Nezznar agreed to hand over the magical items produced by the Forge in exchange for its raw wealth. He also prayed to Lolth, believing this bargain would allow her to gain a “leg up” on Asmodeus, who remained unaware that a great treasure was being taken from him.
To secure his plans, Nezznar used Iarno “Glasstaff” Albrek, a wizard who turned his back on his Neverwinter masters for gold and a staff, to keep Phandalin and the local Zhentarim distracted. Nezznar also orchestrated the capture of Gundren Rockseeker, allowing the Cragmaw goblins under Klarg and Blarg to seize Highthorn (Cragmaw Castle) and deliver Gundren’s map to him.
In Phandalin, the local Zhentarim spymistress, Halia Thorton, tried to navigate this rift by playing both sides of the factional conflict against each other. She trained Erëvyn for weeks to prepare for a dangerous joint infiltration mission to spy on Nezznar. However, the operation took a tragic turn. After Halia and Erëvyn confronted Nezznar, Erëvyn was forced to kill Halia to preserve his cover and prove his loyalty. Erëvyn later confessed to Lucian Nightshade that Halia had winked at him in her final moments to signal that it was alright to strike her down to protect his infiltration. Lucian warmly absolved the young agent, telling him, “You survived, my boy. That’s all any of us can do. We carry the burden of knowledge.”
At this terrible cost, Erëvyn successfully ingratiated himself into the Spider’s operation as a double agent. He sent a covert message to his allies, the adventuring party known as the Magnificent Five, warning them of his undercover status. This critical intelligence allowed the party to launch a successful ambush. During the final battle, after Nezznar’s phase spiders and goblin forces were beaten back, Erëvyn delivered the killing blow to the Spider, shooting an arrow through his eyes.
Following the battle, Halia’s body was found hanging in the entryway of Wave Echo Cave before being respectfully laid to rest in the graveyard outside Phandalin. Resting upon her temporary wooden headstone was a unique Zhentarim amulet shaped like a dragon with its wing bent inward, holding a small moon in its mouth. When touched by Erëvyn, the artifact magically unfurled its wings to deliver a final, posthumous message from Halia, warning him of the guild’s deep-rooted divides and urging him to choose a side.
