Lady Aribeth de Tylmarande (also referred to as Lady Arabeth, Lady Aribeth De Tylmerande, or simply Aribeth) is an elven paladin, highly placed military commander, and prominent political figure in the city of Neverwinter. Operating from Castle Never, she serves as the Captain of the Guard, chief of staff, and the trusted “Right Hand” of Lord Nasher Alagondar. She is a primary figure of authority in the city, responsible for summoning adventurers to testify, leading official state investigations, and overseeing defense logistics. During the heavy wartime preparations for the conflict with Luskan, she has been credited with keeping the city running competently.

Origins and Rise to Prominence

Aribeth was born in Thundertree, an elven settlement nestled within the Neverwinter Woods. In her youth, her village was completely massacred by an orc raiding party, leaving her as the sole survivor. Consumed by grief and a relentless desire for vengeance, she hunted the orcs down until she was caught in a brutal blizzard. Near death in the deep snow, she was rescued by a one-armed man she believed to be an avatar of Erathis, the Lawbearer.

Her savior brought her to a monastery dedicated to the Lawbearer, where she learned to let go of her obsessive vengeance, embraced the teachings of peace and justice, and trained to become a paladin. Her dedication and martial prowess eventually brought her immense fame. Upon moving to Neverwinter, she was chosen as a trusted advisor and member of the elite bodyguard of Lord Nasher Alagondar, making her the first woman and the first non-human to receive this profound honor.

Appearance, Affiliation, and Divine Devotion

A devout champion of divine law, Lady Aribeth wears gleaming silver armor and carries a sword bearing the eye and scales of the god of justice (historically associated with Erathis, and occasionally identified as Tyr). She rides a griffin as part of the Griffin Riders, an elite arm of Neverwinter’s military to which retired soldier Sildar Hallwinter once belonged. When traveling on official duties, she is frequently accompanied by paladins of Helm’s Hold—a fortified monastery dedicated to Erathis, the god of justice and order.

Service on the Small Council

In her role as Captain of the Guard and chief of staff, Aribeth serves on the Small Council of Neverwinter, advising Lord Nasher alongside other key figures. Following the formal declaration of war between Neverwinter and Luskan, her responsibilities have mounted heavily. While she manages overall governance, her Spymaster, Lucien Nightshade, privately harbors deep concerns about a traitor in their midst. Multiple intelligence failures—including the rise of the Dragon Cult, the Phandalin crisis, the recent plague (officially blamed on Luskan), and Luskan landing forces behind allied lines—point to a highly placed spy.

• Lucien Nightshade: The city’s Spymaster (and, unknown to her, the local leader of the Zhentarim).
• Archmage Vael Tarmyth: The high-level magic advisor, who rarely attends council meetings in person and usually sends a proxy.
• Count Geldon Allfield: The city’s Treasurer (also referred to as Count Gelden), a strict “bean counter” who constantly complains about the lack of available funds, though his books show no missing money.
• Aldus Trueshot: A Captain and the Master at Arms (also known as Aldis), who serves as Captain of the Armies.

The Confrontation at Dragon Barrow and Council Summoning

Following the partial resurrection of the green dragon Villathas (the Jade Queen) by the Cult of the Dragon, Lady Aribeth and her paladin companions landed at the smoldering ruins of Lady Tanager Alagondar’s burial mound to investigate.

Upon arriving, she confronted the adventuring party known as the Magnificent Five, demanding an explanation for the gaping crater and accusing them of grave-robbing. The confrontation was marked by several significant encounters:

• Meeting Hrothgar: When the party’s cleric gave his true name, Hrothgar, Aribeth recognized him from historical chronicles detailing the dragon wars of three centuries prior, leaving her visibly shocked. Hrothgar, his patience exhausted, retorted: “Not all of us have the luxury of sleeping for 300 years to come back and do the same job again.”
• Skepticism and Bureaucracy: While she could not deny the physical evidence of a resurrected dragon, she dismissed the party’s claims of a widespread cult conspiracy as a narrative requiring hard evidence. She dryly noted that without proof, the state’s Prisoners’ Isle “could always use a few more occupants.”
• The Small Council Audience: Sildar Hallwinter’s sealed letter of recommendation eventually softened her stance. She offered the party an official audience with the Small Council of Neverwinter to account for themselves and present hard evidence of the Cult of the Dragon’s activities before their next meeting. The meeting was scheduled to take place in three days, firmly holding the line against Hrothgar’s insistence on a faster meeting. By the time the party arrived in Neverwinter to prepare for this audience, Sildar had been recalled to active service with the Griffon Knights and was unreachable.

During her brief time with the party, she also confirmed a troubling piece of intelligence: the legendary Archmage Elminster Aumar, the Sage of Waterdeep, had not been seen anywhere near the city of Neverwinter for over ten years.

Later Incidents

Amidst the rising chaos of the city’s wartime footing and sewer infiltrations, Gilmore of the Magnificent Five fabricated a story about encountering Luskanites in the sewers to bypass city guards. In the confusion, he was sent directly to Lady Aribeth with an official note from Captain Beauregard to report the incident, emphasizing her absolute oversight of the city’s defense and internal security operations.
