Silverwood
Silverwood was a pristine, ancient forest and the ancestral home of the Naila—an elven tribe of lore-keepers, archers, and nature-druids also known as “the secluded ones.” Once a primordial sanctuary of deep magic and natural beauty, the forest was completely destroyed by human colonization, representing a tragic chapter of environmental ruin and cultural displacement on the Sword Coast.
The Naila and the Silverwood
For centuries, Silverwood existed as a sacred glade untouched by the industrial ambitions of civilization. Its elven inhabitants, the Naila, lived in quiet isolation, dedicating themselves to the druidic arts, archery, and the preservation of forest lore. Among its notable residents were the ancient siblings Esfaloth Nightbreeze (later known as the druid Reidoth or “The Fey Touched”) and Nimiriel Nightbreeze. The magic of the forest was deeply bound to its trees; the druids of the Naila maintained a mystical symbiosis with the wilderness, where the health of the flora directly sustained their spellcasting and connection to nature.
The Conquest of Count Richter
The destruction of Silverwood began with the arrival of a human warlord, Count Richter, who marched upon the forest at the head of a metal-clad force of approximately one hundred men. Armed with axes, fire, and a paper scroll affixed with a human wax seal, Richter claimed legal “ownership” of the ancient woods.
When the chieftain of the Naila protested, arguing that his people had tended to the forest since before humans walked the earth, Count Richter executed him on the spot. The heavily armored human forces immediately began clearing the trees, initiating a devastating, asymmetric conflict against the two dozen Naila defenders.
Collapse and Diaspora
As the ancient birches, pines, and ashes of Silverwood fell to human steel and flame, the natural weave of the forest collapsed, causing the local elven magic to rapidly wane. Realizing the battle was lost, Nimiriel Nightbreeze gathered the younglings and surviving refugees, leading them out of the burning woods. They eventually found asylum within the stone walls of the city of Neverwinter, living as permanent refugees in a city park—a place Esfaloth bitterly characterized as a “golden cage.”
Esfaloth remained behind alone in the ruined forest, waging a solitary guerrilla war of retribution for years against the human settlers who cleared the remaining stumps to plant crops. Eventually overwhelmed, he retreated into the deepest corners of the wilderness and spent lost decades wandering the timeless twilight of the Feywild, carrying a deep-seated hatred for human civilization.
