The Feywild
The Feywild (historically spelled Feywilde), also known as the older realm, is an ancient, magical, and highly unpredictable plane of raw nature, trickery, and intense emotion. Existing parallel to the Material Plane, it is a realm of eternal twilight, vibrant flora, and deep enchantments that continuously bleed into the dense, untamed forests of the Sword Coast and the Outer Isles.
In the grand cosmology, the Material Plane sits balanced between the Feywild—representing timeless joy, twilight, and wild growth—and the Shadowfell, which represents death, decay, and undeath. Most objects and landmarks exist across all three planes as mirrored reflections. Portals to the Feywild often manifest at natural mirror-points, such as waterfalls, ancient druidic circles, or places where the boundary is worn thin by thick magical mists. Within this plane, time flows unpredictably and counts for nothing to mortals; a traveler may spend decades wandering its twilight paths and return to the Material Plane to find no time has passed, or vice versa. However, this balance is constantly threatened by malevolent forces from the Shadowfell, such as dark beholders seeking to consume the Feywild in darkness and reduce both it and the Material Plane to ash.
Portals and Crossings
The boundary between the Material Plane and the Feywild is porous, marked by ancient crossings and regions swallowed by thick, spellbound mists.
The Glimmering Deep (Stork’s Rest)
Located on the northern half of Stork’s Rest, a rugged, wind-torn island on the western edge of the Moonshae Isles, lies an ancient oak forest known as the Glimmering Deep.
- Memory and Time Distortion: A heavy fog curls through its canopy even at midday, bending time, space, and memory. Travelers frequently lose track of their purposes and pasts. Fishermen searching for stray livestock have emerged three days later, firmly believing they had been gone for mere minutes. Some enter and never return.
- The Ancient Portal: According to the traditions of the exiled noble House of Stork, the forest once hid a direct portal to the Feywild—an ancient crossing forged through the druidic magic of Gwynneth. The Storks historically raised their children with an oath of civilization (“To the High King, to Order and Civilization, against the Chaos of the Sea and the Magic of the Forest”), fearing the wild magic of the woods.
- Greyhaven and the Harthwyld: At the northernmost point where the forest meets the sea lies Greyhaven, an abandoned port now swallowed by forest-magic, illusions, and fog. The forest is fiercely guarded by creatures like the Harthwyld, a grotesque, half-bear, half-stag beast with sweeping, bone-white antlers.
Arbor and Neverwinter Wood
In the northern reaches of Neverwinter Wood lies Arbor, a magical fairy glade and pocket of Feywild influence. It is a quiet sanctuary of “fairy holes” where bustling fairy families live in harmony with talking beasts and glowing bioluminescent fungi.
Recently, the balance of Neverwinter Wood has been severely disrupted by the resurrection of the green dragon Villathas, the Jade Queen. In response, the local ley lines and trees have begun drawing inward, growing dense, thorned, and impassable along the Neverwinter River to seal the wood away from a Material Plane they no longer trust.
Fey Entities, Allies, and Courts
The magic of the Feywild is represented across the Sword Coast by legendary heroes, fey courts, and champions of nature:
- Esfaloth Nightbreeze / Reidoth (The Fey Touched): A legendary elven archer and powerful druid of over 500 years. He is the last of the Naila (“the secluded ones”), a tribe of lore-keepers from the ancient Silverwood that was razed by the human warlord Count Richter. Following a lonely guerrilla war, Esfaloth departed the Material Plane to spend “lost years” in the timeless twilight of the Feywilde. He eventually returned to the Material Plane to guard Neverwinter Wood under the guise of the eccentric hermit Reidoth. He remains deeply distrustful of human civilization, viewing it as a greater evil than demons or dragons.
- Nalini: A native fairy of the Arbor glade who left her quiet forest home to adventure across the Sword Coast, originally seeking to help heal Neverwinter from the Wailing Death plague. Following her adventures, Nalini experienced a “molt,” shedding her delicate fairy wings. This transformation is a recognized fey phenomenon where those who drift from their natural path or neglect their connection to the natural world lose their wings, though they may regrow them stronger by restoring balance. She possesses a deep connection to plant life, utilizing spore-based magic, conversing with woodland beasts, and wild-shaping. She recently worked to restore the sick Neverwinter Wood, using a Ring of Control Water Elementals to divert water and fast-track the forest’s regrowth.
- Princess Glida and the Seelie Court: A noble of the Seelie Court within the Feywild. Foresight of a future where dragons triumph led Princess Glida to dispatch Luvat, a powerful warrior-druid clad in plate armor with a blue crystal greatsword, and Rocky, a sentient earth elemental, across time and planes to protect Nalini.
- Aja: A powerful fey sorceress whose magic spectacularly backfired, temporarily trapping her in the form of a talking goat on the Material Plane. She eventually allied with the adventurers of Phandalin to cleanse the undead from Axeholm.
- Firbolgs and Giant-kin: The secret firbolg settlement of Kuldahar in Icewind Dale houses an enormous world tree created by Diancastra, the giant goddess of trickery, to exist outside the constraints of the giant Ordning. This fey-aligned community balances trickery, nature, and diplomacy. The clans preach a balance between three deities: Othea (mother goddess of nature, community, and home), Diancastra, and Torvik (the sleeping father of ice and wind, and the first challenger of the Ordning). Spirits of old recognize firbolgs like Farwald (Hrothgar), a skald cleric of Kuldahar, as true “fey allies.”
