Halia Thorton

Halia Thorton was an operative of the Zhentarim—an ancient guild of spies, thieves, and smugglers—who worked undercover as the Spymistress of Phandalin. Within the guild’s network, she allied with moderate reformists like Neverwinter’s Spymaster Lucian Nightshade and Waterdeep’s Jamra Gleamsilver, striving to rehabilitate the Zhentarim’s reputation as elite diplomats and scouts. She stood firmly against the guild’s extremist, fascist elements, such as Nezznar the Spider, who sought dark alliances with the Cult of the Dragon.

Espionage and Nezznar’s Plots

Halia spent weeks training her protégé, Erevyn, in the art of espionage, preparing for a high-stakes mission to spy on the mysterious Underdark mastermind known as The Spider (Nezznar). Nezznar was highly aware of her presence in Phandalin. To keep Halia and the town’s blind priest, Deacon, distracted from his search for the Forge of Spells, Nezznar utilized the Redbrand bandits under Iarno “Glasstaff” Albrek. Furthermore, Nezznar hoped that the sudden emergence of the white dragon Cryovain—who had escaped the grasp of the Cult of the Dragon—would keep Halia too preoccupied to interfere with his plans. Nezznar’s personal journal revealed his deep suspicion of her moderate faction, noting: “Thorton, Nightshade and Gleamsilver are against I imagine. Living so long among the Lord’s Alliance Great Cities has made them weak.”

Confrontation and Self-Sacrifice

Despite these engineered distractions, Halia eventually infiltrated Wave Echo Cave alongside Erevyn. However, the operation ended in tragedy. To successfully go undercover, ingratiate himself with the Spider, and save his own life, Erevyn was forced to make an impossible choice: kill Halia or die alongside her.

As Erevyn later confessed to Lucian Nightshade, Halia recognized the trap they were in and gave him a reassuring wink, silently signaling that it was alright for him to strike her down. Her deliberate self-sacrifice allowed Erevyn to survive, secure the Spider’s trust, and continue working against the Zhentarim’s corrupt factions from within. Nezznar documented this cold betrayal in his personal journal, writing: “And Halia turned up! With some whelp of hers. She is dead now, and the Whelp has sworn himself to me.”

Following her death, her lifeless body was hung from a softly twisting rope in the entryway of Wave Echo Cave—a grim and public monument to the perilous game of espionage she played.

Legacy and Final Message

Following the defeat of the Spider and the clearance of Wave Echo Cave, Halia was laid to rest in the small graveyard outside Phandalin during the Highharvesttide celebrations. Her grave was marked with a temporary wooden headstone bearing the epitaph:

“Halia Thorton. Citizen of Phandalin. ‘She died so that we could live’.”

Hung upon her headstone was a unique Zhentarim amulet shaped like a dragon with its wing bent inward, holding a small moon in its mouth. When touched by Erevyn, the dragon’s wings unfurled, releasing a pre-recorded magical monologue she had prepared before setting off for the cave. In her final message, Halia urged Erevyn to learn from her mistakes, choose a side in the growing Zhentarim schism, and identified the organization’s chapter leaders:

Erevyn eventually recounted her final moments and the heavy burden of his choices to Lucian Nightshade in Neverwinter. Lucian offered his mentor’s absolution, reminding him: “You survived, my boy. That’s all any of us can do. We carry the burden of knowledge.”
