Barakis, The Sandstrom

Barakis, also known as the Sandstrom, is a legendary chromatic dragon who once brought ruin to the Sword Coast.

The Dragon War

Three hundred years ago, a coalition of powerful chromatic dragons attacked the emerging cities of the Sword Coast, laying waste to much of the North. In response, the cities of Silverymoon, Waterdeep, Neverwinter, and Baldur’s Gate formed the Lord’s Alliance to combat the threat, while the city of Luskan chose to surrender and pay tribute to the dragons.

Supported by a legendary group of heroes, the combined armies of the Lord’s Alliance slew the green dragon Virethas, the Jade Queen, and drove the remaining dragons into exile across the world. Barakis was driven into exile, while his counterparts fled to other remote regions:

• Cryovain, the Everfrost (Throat of the World)
• Skaldreth, the Red Rage
• Nocturne, the Dread Prince

The Cult of the Dragon

Following the dragons’ defeat, the dragon queen Tiamat began nurturing the Cult of the Dragon. The Cult’s grand design is to locate the remaining dragons—including Barakis—raise the deceased Virethas as a Dracolich, and crown them as the rulers of the north.
