Lord Nasher Alagondar
Lord Nasher Alagondar (also spelled Lord Nashar Alagondar) is the noble ruler of the city of Neverwinter, governing his realm from the seat of power at Castle Never within the Castle District. As a key leader of the Lord’s Alliance, Lord Alagondar oversees a realm recovering from devastating historical plagues while contending with growing dangers across the Sword Coast. Following the formal declaration of war between Neverwinter and its rival city Luskan, he has placed the city on a strict, heavy wartime footing.
The Alagondar Lineage and the Dragon Scourge
The Alagondar name is deeply intertwined with the heroic history of the North. Three hundred years ago, a coalition of five chromatic dragons devastated the Sword Coast. In response, the Lord’s Alliance was formed, bringing together the armies of Neverwinter, Waterdeep, Silverymoon, and Baldur’s Gate to push back the threat.
The five dragons who spearheaded this onslaught were:
- Virethas, the Jade Queen: An exceptionally cunning green dragon who was slain outside Neverwinter.
- Cryovain, the Everfrost: A white dragon who originally fled to the Throat of the World.
- Skaldreth, the Red Rage: A red dragon.
- Barakis, the Sandstorm: A blue dragon.
- Nocturne, the Dread Prince: A black dragon.
The alliance succeeded in part due to a legendary band of heroes:
- Lady Tanager Alagondar: The celebrated human hero of Neverwinter. In a climactic confrontation, she drove her legendary greatsword, Dragon Slayer, through the heart of Virethas, though she tragically perished when the wyrm’s claw pierced her chest. She was laid to rest in the Dragon Barrow along the road toward Helm’s Hold. Her tomb’s inscription decreed that only the blood of Alagondar may lift the sword.
- Elminster Aumar: The Sage of Shadowdale (and later Sage of Waterdeep), currently a leader of the Harpers. He has not been seen in Neverwinter for over a decade.
- Hrothgar Hillsfar: A Firbolg cleric and skald from the world-tree settlement of Kuldahar. Believed deceased, he was actually transformed into the human elder Farwald via a powerful Modify Memory and True Polymorph cast by Elminster to protect his family and community from draconic vengeance.
- Esfaloth Nightbreeze: A fey-touched druid whose current location is unknown. Furious over the awakening of the green dragon, he has chosen to lock the Neverwinter Wood away from the world.
- Gorion of Candlekeep: A Zhentarim agent who was later killed by Sarevok.
- Kiara Shadowbreaker: Mistress of the Hunt and Harper agent, who currently rules Keoland.
- Uther Vendrock: The Silvered Star, a Platinum Dragon who lies buried on Stormwreck Isle.
Unbeknownst to many, the Alagondar bloodline survived through the exiled noble House of Stork on the western island of Stork’s Rest in the Moonshaes. Recently, Lady Tanager’s great-great-grandson, Gilmore Stork, returned to the Sword Coast and successfully drew the Dragon Slayer greatsword, breaking the protective ward sealing Virethas’s remains. This act, dubbed “Gilmore’s Folly,” allowed the Cult of the Dragon to complete a resurrection ritual at 66% efficacy, returning Virethas as a weakened adult green dragon fused with the soul of Gilmore’s sister, Elire Stork, and the power of the Green Dragon Mask, before she escaped into the skies.
Following the disaster, Lady Arabeth de Tylmarande confronted the adventurers at the smoking crater. Upon recognizing the ancient hero Hrothgar and reading Sildar Hallwinter’s sealed letter of recommendation, her stance softened. She summoned the party to the Neverwinter council in three days’ time to account for themselves and present evidence of the Cult of the Dragon.
Governance, the Small Council, and City Districts
Lord Nasher governs Neverwinter with the aid of his Small Council of trusted advisors. Influence within his court is highly coveted, and the council consists of several key figures who manage the city’s precarious state:
- Lady Arabeth de Tylmarande (Aribeth): An elven paladin originally from Thundertree. After her village was massacred by orcs, she relentlessly hunted them until she was rescued from a blizzard by a one-armed avatar of Erathis. Trained at an Erathis monastery, her armor bears the eye and scales of Tyr, god of justice. She is the first woman and first non-human chosen as Captain of the Guard and serves as Lord Nasher’s Right Hand.
- Lucien Nightshade: He serves as the city’s Spymaster and is also the local chapter leader of the Zhentarim in Neverwinter, residing in a grand manor within the Blacklake District. Lucien strongly suspects a spy on the council due to a sequence of catastrophic intelligence failures: the Phandalin situation, the plague, the Cult emerging undetected, and Luskan landing forces behind Neverwinter’s lines. He has vetted the entire council, and because they all checked out, he is deeply worried.
- Archmage Vael Tarmyth: The city’s high-level magical advisor, who rarely attends council meetings in person and usually sends a proxy.
- Count Gelden Allfield: The city’s Treasurer, who constantly complains about the lack of available funds on the books for Neverwinter’s defense.
- Aldis Trueshot: A Captain who serves as Neverwinter’s Master at Arms and Captain of the Armies.
- Lord Admiral Finster Lionheart: The city’s Admiral and Shipmaster.
Neverwinter is structured into several distinct districts:
- Castle District: The heart of the city, containing Castle Never and administrative structures like the Admiralty.
- Blacklake District: The home of the wealthy nobility, circling Blacklake. It features Lucien Nightshade’s manor and high-class inns.
- Market District: The bustling commercial center, containing the famous Moonstone Mask Inn, the Trade of Blades, and the Pig and the Whistle tavern.
- Arcanist District: Dominated by the Cloaktower, a hub for wizards, arcane shops, and alchemical supplies.
- Temple District: Houses the Hall of Justice (followers of Erathis), Raven’s Rest, modest temples to other gods, the class-separated city graveyard, and the Emerald Grove of the Emerald Enclave.
- Beggar’s Nest: The southern slums across the river, acting as the first stop for incoming southern caravans and a haven for the criminal underworld. It features the Cha-Ching casino, fronted by a mural of a coin-falling woman and managed by the influential half-orc boss Anthony “the Gentleman”.
- Peninsula District: A middle-class residential area of fishermen and bakers connected by bridge to an island prison known as Prisoners’ Isle.
- The Docks: A bustling waterfront outside the walls, essential for trade, shipbuilding, and military mobilization.
Modern Challenges and the Looming War
Under Lord Nasher’s stewardship, Neverwinter faces severe trials. The city is still actively recovering from the aftermath of the Wailing Death, a devastating magical plague that struck its population a year prior. A rumored cure for the plague involved four magical creatures, detailed in an intercepted letter signed by “J.G.” and marked with a symbol of a dragon swallowing a moon—a sigil closely observed by Zhentarim agents like Er’evyn Sehahine.
Logging shipments destined for Neverwinter’s reconstruction are routinely interrupted in Neverwinter Wood, and the terrifying return of the white dragon Cryovain, the Everfrost, threatens the balance of power across the Sword Coast. Political tensions have escalated since Neverwinter formally declared war on Luskan.
Talis, currently held in the high-security cells of Prisoners’ Isle, holds critical secrets that he intends to barter for protection.
Inside the city’s underbelly, the sewer system’s water levels have grown highly unstable. This was caused by the disappearance of Patricius, the Head of Sewers and Waterways, who fled with a magical ring he used to power the city’s waterways to cover his gambling debts. Anthony “the Gentleman” has offered to trade critical intelligence to the adventurers in exchange for finding Patricius and retrieving the ring. Meanwhile, the strain of war preparation has pushed the Emerald Grove—managed by the Emerald Enclave ranger Nimiriel Nightbreeze—to its limits, using its magic to feed and shelter starving children affected by the city’s food shortages.
