Nalini

Nalini is a fairy adventurer who travels the perilous wilds of the Sword Coast as a member of the adventuring group known as The Magnificent Five (also colloquially celebrated by the townsfolk of Phandalin as the “Fantastic Five” or “one of the heroes”). She is known for her profound, instinctual connection to nature, a sharp, inquisitive mind that bridges the gap between old magic and forgotten lore, and her distinct Spore Druid abilities.

“She is a real fairy. And a real hero at that. One of the finders of the Forge of Spells!”

Background and Early Life

Nalini grew up in the northern reaches of Neverwinter Wood within a magical fairy glade known as Arbor. As the middle child in a large fairy family, she often preferred escaping the busy, crowded confines of her family’s “fairy hole” to enjoy the quiet of the forest, learning from the trees and speaking with the small forest critters.

Her childhood was deeply steeped in ancestral lore. She spent nights listening to her grandmother’s stories told around the magical pyres of the Arbor Land. Through these family tales, she grew up hearing of the legendary Age of Arcanum and the devastating war known as the Calamity that followed it. This oral tradition became tangible when she eventually stood within the Spell Forge chamber, witnessing the ancient star-charts of the era and hearing the projected message of Gond, whom she learned was not a deity but a master dwarven blacksmith who built the forge during the Age of Arcanum.

About a year before her adventures began, Nalini learned from the trees and visiting druids of a terrible plague—the Wailing Death—afflicting the city of Neverwinter. The Druids of the Emerald Enclave were calling for aid from all of nature’s spirits and healers. Eager for adventure and desiring to help, Nalini packed her small bag with mushrooms and trinkets and set out. Along the way, she was easily distracted by cute animals and miscellaneous mishaps, including meeting a beautiful human prince who turned out to be ugly on the inside.

She finally arrived in Neverwinter only two weeks prior to her journey south. The bustling markets, the clanging of carts, the wind blowing in the sails of wooden ships in the docks, and the squalor of the Beggar’s Nest slums were entirely new and overwhelming to her. She found solace in the city’s quiet druid grove, centered around a beautiful and massive Oak tree. There, an Emerald Enclave ranger named Nimiriel Nightbreeze welcomed her. Since the plague had already subsided, Nimiriel suggested Nalini travel south to Phandalin. The Enclave had lost touch with two of its members during the plague—the Druid Reidoth and the Cleric Aadbra Gwynn—and rumors spoke of unusually cold autumn weather descending on the region.

While at the grove, Nalini met the excitable dwarf Gundren Rockseeker as he was purchasing fresh fruit and berries for an upcoming caravan heading south. Sensing the call of a new adventure and wanting to help restore the balance of nature, she joined Sildar Hallwinter and Gundren’s journey at the Neverwinter city gates.

Character and Abilities

Nalini is characterized by her deep connection to nature, possessing an “unusual talent with animals and plants.” As a fairy, she originally used her wings to fly above the brush, allowing her to serve as an excellent guide and scout in the untamed wilderness. However, due to recent developments in her magical nature, she has lost her physical wings (see below) and has had to adapt her spellcasting.

She is a highly skilled Spore Druid, employing wild shape magic to shift into various creatures, such as a spider to scout the deep recesses of Wave Echo Cave or a sturdy bear to absorb damage in the heat of battle (including during the intense conflict at Dragon Barrow). Following her wing-loss, the ancient druid Esfaloth taught her how to wild shape into flying creatures to regain her aerial scouting capabilities.

In combat, she wields nature-based and elemental magic. Her repertoire includes the Entangle spell to control the battlefield, Ice Knife and other ice-based spells (such as Ice Storm cast via her Staff of Frost) to slow, hold, and freeze adversaries at bay, and summoning a ball of flame to incinerate enemy defenses. She can also conjure the aid of nature’s forces, once summoning a giant Myconid to storm enemy lines and break a spectral defense, and later summoning a Giant Frog to disable her targets by swallowing them whole. Nalini is also skilled in close-quarters staff combat, wielding her magical staff in battle when pressed. She first employed this tactic alongside Farwald during a night ambush at an abandoned temple of Ioun, defending her companions against three Dragonborn and a Green Dragon Wyrmling.

Nalini is exceptionally capable of restorative magic, which she has utilized to heal critically wounded allies during intense skirmishes, such as restoring the rogue Er’vyn during a cellar ambush at Tristan Manor and reviving Gilmore from the brink of death after the assault at the Temple of Ioun. Her most extraordinary magical feat occurred when the Firbolg Farwald was slain and his body began disintegrating into ash in the Observatory of Sehanine. Performing a desperate and dark reversal of her nature magic, Nalini rushed forward, kneeling before Farwald’s disintegrating corpse and pulling out her inventory of mushrooms, weeds, diamonds, spell components, alchemical ingredients, and reagents. Closing her eyes, she focused on her connection with the living things around her and initiated a process she never dreamed she would ever perform: rather than tapping into and enhancing the life of the various elements, she drained their raw life essence to channel the energy directly into Farwald. This crucial anchor successfully bound Farwald’s soul back to his physical form, allowing her allies to assist in completing the resurrection.

In addition to her wilderness skills, Nalini possesses a great talent for alchemy, arcana, and magical craftsmanship. During her downtime, she crafts potions and identifies magical relics recovered by her party on their travels. Her identifying work has cataloged several powerful items, including the Glasstaff, a Bag of Holding, a Ring of Protection (recovered near a petrified dwarf), a Pearl of Power, a Staff of Frost, and a Wind Fan (with the latter three items gifted by the surviving monks Jaque and Zoe after the defense of Snowmont Monastery). Later in Neverwinter, she was gifted the Bracers of Barkskin by the spymaster Lucian Nightshade, raising her permanent AC to 16. She also identified the pale, opal-blue Ring of Control Water Elementals, which grants command over water elementals, liquid-walking, underwater breathing, and swim speed.

Alongside the wizard Farwald, Nalini demonstrated unique magical finesse when they successfully melted down a massive golden bell—worth 2500 gold, which they had bargained from a dragon-tattooed sorcerer—into smaller pieces to fit into their Bag of Holding (the gold pieces were later successfully sold off by Gilmore for 2600 gp). She also helped Farwald and the gnome academic Dusty dispel a curse from Hope’s Berserker Axe.

Nalini has a creative green thumb, having discovered that defeated zombies mixed with a specific blend of mushrooms can be repurposed into highly effective fertilizer to restore the neglected gardens of Tristan Manor, where she often spends time meditating. Furthermore, Nalini is exceptionally sharp-witted; she deduced that “Elvish Tears”—one of the keys required to activate Gond’s Smelter in Wave Echo Cave—was a mistranslation. She realized that “Grace of the Elves” refers to Selune and that “Elvish Tears” actually refers to the Moonbeam spell. She also learned from the ancient dwarf Gotrek that activating the smelter would require blue-burning wood, ore, and this elvish spell.

Nalini is well-versed in the lore of the land; she recognizes Elminster Aumar as arguably the most powerful wizard in the realm, a force for good, the author of The Rise and Fall of the Pact of Phandelver, and the famous Sage of Waterdeep.

The Loss of Her Wings

Following a terrifying shared dream-fight against a Shadowfell beholder, Nalini woke up in the Emerald Grove to find her wings lying on the ground beside her, having fallen completely off like a molt rather than a cut. Though she was physically uninjured and her magic read only slightly weaker, she was left flightless.

Historical lore suggests that fey who neglect their bond with the natural world slowly find their connection fraying, leading them to shed their wings. However, this is viewed as a transformation rather than a permanent loss; by restoring balance to nature and reconnecting with the earth, she may eventually regrow into something stronger. She began this path of restoration in the Neverwinter Wood under the guidance of Esfaloth.

Recent History

The Phandalin Campaign

Nalini, alongside a diverse group of companions—including Farwald, Gilmore, Hope, and Er’vyn—was contracted by Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter to escort a supply cart from the city of Neverwinter down the High Road to Phandalin, with instructions to deliver the goods to Barthen.

During their journey, the party encountered a goblin ambush, discovering that Sildar and Gundren’s horses had been killed. Nalini and Farwald utilized their magic, alongside Hope’s ferocity, to help quickly dispatch the attackers. After a brief interrogation of a captured goblin, the group learned of “Klarg” and the “Cragmaw Hideout,” where the dwarf and the knight were being held.

Serving as a guide both through and above the brush, Nalini led her companions safely through the wilderness to the hideout. She scouted the mouth of the cave, reporting back to the group regarding the presence of wolves and a goblin sentry. During the ensuing assault to rescue Sildar, Nalini cast Entangle to keep the goblins scattered while her companions defeated the bugbear Klarg, who was operating under orders from “the Spider” to intercept Gundren. Following Sildar’s rescue and the recovery of stolen Lionshield Coster supplies, a Jade Statuette of a Frog, and other treasures, Nalini and her allies completed their journey to Phandalin, where they met the retired adventurer Deacon.

While the party gathered for lunch at the Stonehill Inn to plan their next steps, Nalini expressed a strong desire to seek out Aadbra Gwynn, the town’s miller, midwife, and follower of the Wildmother who had been missing for weeks, and Reidoth the Druid, who resided in Neverwinter Wood but had not been seen for months. She questioned Deacon to gather intelligence on their disappearances, learning that Reidoth had been harassing logging camps to let nature reclaim the land.

Shortly thereafter, Nalini accompanied her allies to Tristan Manor to confront the Redbrands. During the subterranean battle against Glasstaff the wizard in his cellar laboratory, Er’vyn was critically injured by the wizard’s magic. Nalini acted swiftly to heal Er’vyn, allowing him to recover his footing and ultimately finish off the remaining threats.

Following the defeat of the Redbrands and a subsequent arduous mission to the Snowmont Monastery—where they successfully repelled Ice Trolls and Mephits and witnessed the passage of the white dragon Cryovain—the party officially registered their group name as “The Magnificent Five” and took legal ownership of Tristan Manor, bequeathed to them by Myrna Tristan. During a brief period of respite in Phandalin, the party finally met with the returned Aadbra Gwynn. While some of her companions pursued other errands in town, Nalini focused on restoring their new home base, identifying the party’s newly acquired magical treasures, crafting potions, and working to fix up the manor’s garden.

Later, while resting at an abandoned temple of Ioun in Conyberry after acquiring a massive golden bell, Nalini and Farwald used their magical finesse to melt the bell down for transport. That night, the party was ambushed by Dragonborn attackers and a Green Dragon Wyrmling. In the ensuing vicious struggle, Nalini fought back using her staff for the first time and casting Ice Knife and ice spells to hold the assailants at bay. After the enemies were defeated, she quickly healed Gilmore, who had been knocked unconscious and left a mere inch from death.

Upon returning to Phandalin, the party met with Dusty, a gnome academic who had escaped the Spider’s captivity in Wave Echo Cave. Dusty believed that Gundren Rockseeker had been killed by Blarg, the Bugbear leader of Cragmaw Castle, and that his map was taken by the Spider, though this would later prove to be an error as Gundren survived his captivity. After restoring Tristan Manor and removing the curse from Hope’s axe, Nalini and the Magnificent Five set out for Wave Echo Cave. Nalini shifted into a spider to scout the cave ahead of her allies. Though she was nearly caught under the dark influence of Lolth, she successfully slipped past a goblin kitchen cooking over a blue flame. She discovered a colony of Myconids and bioluminescent mushrooms, sharing her vision and senses with them. The Myconids revealed that while they would only defend their immediate colony, a severed part of their network still lived in Wave Echo Cave and could aid the party in an ambush. They also suggested that the gnomes of Gnomengarde, who lived beyond the waterfall in symbiosis with them, might offer assistance. Guided by this insight, Nalini directed the rest of her party to meet her in Gnomengarde to seek King Korboz’s aid.

Upon arriving at the settlement, Gnomengarde rules dictated that only three members of the party—Nalini, Gilmore, and Farwald—were permitted entry, leaving the remaining companions to camp outside. Inside Gnomengarde, the party quickly discovered that the local magical Weave caused unpredictable side effects for any spells cast. They spoke with the gnomish inventors Dimblestib and Dabbledob to learn of strange happenings, and went to aid King Korboz, finding him paranoid, terrified, and having tied up King Gnerki. They soon discovered that the welcoming gnome woman who greeted them was actually a disguised doppelganger. A fierce battle erupted in King Korboz’s throne room, during which Nalini was seriously injured and nearly knocked unconscious by the doppelganger’s relentless attacks. Despite this, the party killed one of the shapechangers and drove the other into hiding, successfully freeing King Korboz from his paralyzed state of terror.

“There we see a small fairly, herself decked in greens and yellows, but her face is alight with reds and oranges, sweat beading on her face, as she concentrates fiercly to burn away this arachnid influence.”

Nalini smites the Altor of Lloth

After recuperating with the aid of the gnomish girl Linxie, the party prepared to finally confront the Spider back in Wave Echo Cave. During the climactic ambush, Nalini summoned a ball of flame, sweating and concentrating fiercely as she set fire to the webs and spider eggs covering the Altar of Lolth, which the Spider (revealed to be a Drider named Nezznar) had defiled from its original purpose as an altar to Moradin. In response, two Phase Spiders materialized on the party’s back line, wreaking havoc and knocking both Nalini and Farwald unconscious. Fortunately, Gilmore utilized his connection to the Matron of Ravens to give Nalini and Farwald the strength to keep going. Supported by her allies, the party held the line until Erevyn delivered the killing blow to Nezznar.

With the Spider defeated, Nalini and the Magnificent Five proceeded to Gond’s Smelter, successfully activating it through their combined ingenuity. As the molten metal filled the floor grooves, the chamber lit up with a projection of the night sky as it appeared 1,000 years ago, highlighting three constellations: a delicate hand, a great castle, and a jeweled hammer. This activated the Spell Forge’s automated defensive program, the Guardian of the Forge. By working together and disrupting its magical pylons, the party defeated the Guardian and recovered powerful relics of the Age of Arcanum, including the Plate of the Pact, Cabal’s Ruin, the Circlet of Larrelion, Nolzur’s Magnificent Pigments, and a legendary Deck of Many Things.

Following the successful liberation of Wave Echo Cave, Phandalin celebrated during Highharvesttide—the last day of summer. At the festival, children approached Nalini to ask if she was a real fairy, a status enthusiastically confirmed by the recovering Gundren Rockseeker, who had been rescued from Cragmaw Castle. Having left her home in the Arbor Land only weeks prior, Nalini found herself reflecting on the dead bodies she had witnessed, her own matured appearance, and what it truly meant to look like a hero.

Strange. You wanted to leave home so bad, for so long. And in the few short weeks since you’ve seen so much. Met some good people, but also some very bad ones. Strange to think you barely even had seen a dead body until recently, and now have seen so many. As you catch a reflection of yourself in your wine glass, you notice you look just a tiny bit older. And you are left wondering: is this what a hero looks like?

Shadows of the North and the Expedition to Axeholm

Weeks after their victory at the Forge of Spells, as autumn settled in and the harvests were complete, Nalini returned to her daily morning routines in the garden of Tristan Manor. Though the colder-than-normal autumn was strange, it allowed her to cultivate wintery mushrooms and berries. Sinking her feet into the soft earth, Nalini attuned to the songs of the vast mycelium network and connected with the mycelium colony left in Wave Echo Cave. The colony reported that they were flourishing by consuming the remains of the Spider’s forces, but also shared a troubling insight: while the cold from the south had slowed, a deep, mournful dirge of immense grief was echoing from the North. Before she could investigate further, a sudden surge of red-hot anger from the North ruptured her connection, pushing her away and silencing the natural elements.

Intent on uncovering the mystery behind the supernatural cold and aiding Reidoth, the druid rumored to be struggling with logging camps near the Neverwinter River, Nalini joined her party in planning their next moves. To pursue the redemption of Agatha the banshee’s cursed sister Vyldara, the party set out toward the ancient dwarven fortress of Axeholm, guided by the dwarf Gotrek.

Along the road, the group encountered a talking goat named Aja, who revealed herself to be a fey sorceress whose magic had backfired, trapping her in animal form. Agreeing to help the party clear Axeholm of undead in exchange for their assistance, Aja used her lightning magic to blast open the fortress doors. Inside, the group was immediately ambushed by strange shadows. Working in tandem with Farwald and Aja, Nalini utilized her magic to swiftly dispatch the shadow threats.

Pressing deeper, the party confronted the banshee Vyldara. When Gilmore called out that Agatha had sent them, Vyldara flew into a furious rage and unleashed a devastating banshee’s wail. The piercing scream instantly knocked almost the entire party unconscious, leaving only Er’vyn and Gotrek standing. Thanks to desperate negotiations and defensive efforts, the party bought enough time to heal and prepare. Recognizing that Vyldara could not be reasoned with and posed a threat of possession, the party attacked, and Gilmore finally severed her connection to the physical plane, allowing her cursed soul to pass on peacefully.

Before Vyldara dissolved into moonlit dust to pass into Selune’s embrace by the Redemption of the Matron, she offered her final words as a benediction, nodding to Nalini, Farwald, and Aja as her “Fey allies” who had braved the haunted halls of Axeholm alongside the descendants of the ancient Pact.

Restoration of the Hand of Sehanine

Following their deeds at Axeholm, the party set out toward the Hand of Sehanine, a shimmering, phase-shifting elven tower of elven magic and prophecy that had been lost to a divine curse for a millennium. Guided by visions and the full moon’s light, the party brought the legendary fortress fully back into the Material Plane. Inside, they found the ghostly denizens trapped in tragic, repeating loops of memory.

Nalini took an active role in restoring peace to the Hand. On the Sentinel Floor, when the fortress’s spectral archers and defenders attempted to push the party back, Nalini summoned a giant Myconid that stormed their lines, breaking their ranks alongside Farwald’s magical wind shield. Afterward, she traveled to the Pinky tower, where the spectral gardener Valestis tended to the withered grounds. By watering the soil with pure, restorative water from the Moonwell, Nalini let the garden grow again. With her touch, the skeleton vines bloomed anew, and the air sweetened as flowers turned their faces toward her.

This act of deep compassion weakened the madness of Larellion, the tower’s architect and Baelnorn lich. Nalini stood with her companions during the final multi-phase battle in the Middle Finger’s Observatory. During this struggle, Farwald was struck by Larellion’s sickly green arrow and slain, his body beginning to disintegrate into ash. Nalini rushed forward and initiated a desperate resurrection ritual, pulling out her magical components and draining their essence to save Farwald. The party subsequently subdued Larellion, helping him find repentance, and lifting the millennium-old curse so the spirits could finally fade into true rest.

Journey North and the Return to Neverwinter

Following their victory at the Hand of Sehanine, the party traveled north back toward Nalini’s starting point: the jewel of the North, the city of Neverwinter. During the journey, the party paused to rest at an old lighthouse, where they repelled an ambush by pirates. While returning Farwald to his true Firbolg body, his mind remained foggy and confused, prompting the group to seek aid.

They stopped at Helm’s Hold, a fortified monastery dedicated to Erathis, the god of justice and order, seeking a cleric to restore Farwald’s memories. Because the fortress is protected by strict wards against otherworldly creatures, Nalini was blocked by an invisible barrier as a fey and was forced to wait outside. Her companions successfully negotiated with a halfling cleric named Sandra to heal Farwald’s mind, though the party was subsequently banned and escorted out of the hold after Er’vyn defaced a wall.

Upon arriving at Neverwinter at sundown, the party encountered heavy wartime preparations against a brewing conflict with Luskan. Split for the evening, Nalini and Farwald headed to the Emerald Grove in the Temple District. There, they found the druid Nimiriel Nightbreeze entirely overwhelmed, using the grove’s magic to shelter and feed dozens of starving children displaced by severe food shortages. Nalini and Farwald immediately dedicated their magical abilities to the grove’s efforts, helping to heal the sick children and grow crops of food to sustain them.

The Dragon Barrow Expedition and Its Aftermath

Seeking to prevent the resurrection of the ancient green dragon Villathas (the Jade Queen), the party ventured into a cavern of bone-white stalagmites and acid pools deep beneath Dragon Barrow. The party soon realized they were actually standing inside the skeletal remains of Villathas herself. When Gilmore drew the legendary Dragon Slayer sword, it triggered a powerful magical trap; Nalini failed her Wisdom saving throw and was temporarily paralyzed.

Once the paralysis broke, a chaotic battle erupted against Sidorna, the Green Wyrmspeaker, and her cultists. Nalini and Farwald (now using his true name, Hrothgar) combined forces to unleash a massive Ice and Sleet Storm, coating the cavern in ice, forcing cultists prone, and disrupting their spellcasting. Facing a dangerous monk who inflicted heavy damage, Nalini wild-shaped into a bear to absorb the blows. Utilizing her Staff of Frost, she cast Ice Storm at a range of 300 feet, successfully dealing heavy damage and killing a cultist.

As the cultists advanced their resurrection ritual, Nalini summoned a Giant Frog that swallowed Sidorna’s head, blinding her and critically disrupting her chanting. Nalini also utilized her Spore Druid abilities, casting Entangle to hold the cultists at bay and firing off a Shatter spell that destroyed a historical mural of her allies and past heroes, sending debris flying into her enemies. Despite these efforts, Sidorna sacrificed her remaining cultists and triggered a massive blast of necrotic energy that knocked Nalini unconscious again. Though the ritual was completed in a weakened state, Nalini was successfully revived by her allies, and they managed to leap out of the lurching, rising skeletal dragon just as it began breaking free from the barrow.

Following the chaotic battle, the party made camp nearby in a small copse. During their watch, Nalini noticed something deeply wrong; the trees of the Neverwinter Wood were moving, drawing inward to form a defensive line around the wood. Feeling the same sense of grief and abandonment she had sensed weeks earlier, she witnessed Hrothgar try to reason with the furious Druid Esfaloth. Esfaloth, angry that the party had accidentally helped wake the dragon, refused to cooperate and locked the forest away entirely. As Nalini turned away, a rogue root caught her foot and dropped her flat on the ground.

Growing increasingly wary of the political landscape, Nalini pulled Gilmore aside for a private conversation. She expressed deep suspicion regarding his family’s potential desire for a dragon-sister and pointed out that his headlong rush to draw the sword had looked highly convenient. Though Gilmore insisted he had not seen the trap, Nalini accepted the answer with lingering caution, noting that a Zone of Truth would likely settle the matter for good once they returned to Neverwinter.

Infiltrating Blacklake and Sewer Exploits

Following the Dragon Barrow ambush, the party was summoned by Lady Arabeth de Tylmarande to testify before the Small Council in three days. Upon returning to Neverwinter, the city was heavily locked down for the war against Luskan. Under the watchful eye of a new guard chaperon named Sheila, the party split up to prepare for their hearing.

Nalini accompanied Er’vyn to the Blacklake District to meet with his Zhentarim mentor, Lucian Nightshade, who also served as Lady Arabeth’s spymaster. Because the gates to the wealthy district were locked down during daylight hours, Nalini and Er’vyn infiltrated via the sewers. Navigating the dark tunnels, Nalini noticed that the water level was unusually high—reaching Er’vyn’s knees—and heard a distant, rushing current upstream. After Nalini used a Minor Illusion to distract a guard, she clung to Er’vyn’s back as they pushed up against an inflow of water to emerge through a grate into Blacklake. Nalini quickly utilized Druidcraft to clean the sewer filth from their clothes before they arrived at Nightshade Manor.

During their warm meeting with Lucian, the spymaster confirmed his fears of a mole on the Neverwinter council. To aid them in their upcoming trials, Lucian opened a hidden cache and gifted Nalini a pair of Bracers of Barkskin—wooden braces that magically raise her defense to a permanent AC of 16. Lucian also advised the party to seek out a Beggar’s Nest contact named Anthony “the Gentleman” Calloway.

Reconvening with their companions at the Moonstone Mask, the party ventured into the slums of Beggar’s Nest to find the Cha-Ching casino, where Hope was working as a bouncer. Inside, they negotiated with the Gentleman, a tall half-orc boss. He refused to share his secrets for free, instead offering a trade: the city’s Head of Sewers and Waterways, Patricius, had recently vanished alongside a magical ring he used to run the city’s waterways. This disappearance had caused the unstable water levels Nalini witnessed earlier. The Gentleman promised to reveal the identity of the council mole and pay the party in gold if they retrieved Patricius and the ring within two days.

Entering the sewers to hunt for Patricius, Nalini and her allies encountered a group of Luskan pirates who had captured the comptroller and were using the stolen ring to enslave a water elemental. Although a fierce battle ensued and the party defeated the pirates, Patricius was unfortunately killed in the crossfire. Nalini identified the recovered item as the Ring of Control Water Elementals, an opal-blue band of immense power. Rather than returning it to Anthony Calloway, the party chose to hide the ring in their Bag of Holding and deceive the Gentleman, claiming the pirates had made off with it. The Gentleman accepted the lie, paying them half the reward and directing them to a prison informant named Talis the White.

Upon emerging from the sewers, the party met two unexpected allies waiting at the grate: a warrior-druid named Luvat and a sentient earth elemental named Rocky, both dispatched by Princess Glida of the Seelie Court to protect Nalini across planes and time.

The Beholder Dream and Flightlessness

That night, while resting in the Emerald Grove alongside Nimiriel Nightbreeze, Nalini was plunged into a terrifying nightmare. The vision showed her Feywild home consumed by darkness, while a voice accused her of abandonment. The dream shifted to a future Neverwinter engulfed in flames, with Castle Never turned into a mound of gold ruled by a red dragon and the Feywild reduced to ash. The source of the nightmare was revealed to be a Beholder from the Shadowfell, bent on ensuring this catastrophic timeline. Nalini’s companions joined her within the dreamscape, successfully destroying the beholder.

When Nalini awoke in the grove, she discovered a distressing transformation: her delicate fairy wings had shed and fallen clean off. Left entirely flightless, Nalini underwent examinations from her allies, who determined that her magical essence was uninjured but her bond with nature had frayed due to her drifting path. Deeply shaken, Nalini resolved to enter the Neverwinter Wood to directly address the broken balance of the region.

Reclaiming the Balance in Neverwinter Wood

Traveling into the woods, Nalini and her companions observed that the Neverwinter River was flowing sluggishly, a clear sign of the land’s sickness. Deep within the dense, thorned wood, the trees moaned “Why” on the wind. Nalini sank her hands into the soil, channeling the spores and mycelium to witness the forest’s memory. She was pulled into a harrowing vision of a graveyard of tree stumps, a devastated logging camp, and a choked river.

Restoring the Deadwood
Restoring the Deadwood

In this graveyard, she confronted Esfaloth (the Druid Reidoth), a 500-year-old pale elf and “The Fey Touched,” who was the last of the Naila tribe from the ancient Silverwood. Esfaloth recounted how human civilization had brutally razed his ancestral home, leading his sister Nimiriel to safety while he waged a lonely, bitter war. He argued that human civilization was the ultimate evil, refusing to negotiate a compromise of coexistence.

Though Esfaloth distrusted the others, he respected Nalini. Seeking to prove her dedication to the balance, Nalini made a profound sacrifice: she attuned to the Ring of Control Water Elementals and used its magic to divert and control the waterways, embarking on an intensive eight-hour casting to enrich and speed the regrowth of the wood. Amazed by her willingness to exhaust the ring’s magic and her natural talent with spore growth, Esfaloth relented. He showed Nalini how to wild shape into flying creatures to compensate for her lost wings, and the two flew together high over the newly regrown canopy of Neverwinter Wood.
