Overview
Conyberry is a notable, ruined settlement situated within the wilder regions of the Sword Coast, flanked by the Neverwinter Wood and the Sword Mountains. Once a conventional and peaceful village, it is now defined by its ancient ruins, lingering spirits, and forgotten sanctuaries of power. In recent times, it has served as a critical waypoint for adventurers uncovering the legacy of the historic Pact of Phandelver.
Key Landmarks
The Abandoned Temple of Ioun
Conyberry houses a ruined temple dedicated to Ioun, the Knowing Mistress. Though long abandoned, the structure still holds lingering divine magic. Key features of the temple include:
- The Altar to Ioun: A functional divine relic. When used, the altar granted seekers revelation on several critical matters: the precise location of Cragmaw Castle (the ancient seat of Highthorn), the ultimate ambitions of the white dragon Cryovain (who seeks to bring winter everywhere with the aid of allies), the origin of Farwald’s memory exhaustion (a powerful Modify Memory spell cast by Elminster Aumar, the Sage of Waterdeep), and Ioun’s consent for travelers to claim the temple’s sacred bell.
- The Temple Bell: A sacred, massive golden object which was cleared for removal by the deity herself. The travelers acquired this bell during a barter with a mysterious sorcerer, who traded the 2,500 gold-valued relic in exchange for their knowledge of the green dragon Virethas. Adventurers later used magical finesse to melt the bell down into smaller pieces so they could fit inside a Bag of Holding, eventually fencing the golden pieces in Phandalin for 2,600 gold pieces with the assistance of the wayward merchant Mikael.
The Grove of Agatha the Banshee
Conyberry is widely feared as the domain of Agatha, an ancient elven banshee who has haunted the region for over a thousand years. In life, Agatha was the gentler, knowledge-seeking daughter of Archmage Larellion, the High Mage of the Hand of Sehanine and Keeper of the Astrolabe. Known as the “Moonlit Prodigy,” she possessed a deep desire for learning and vanished shortly before the Hand fell silent, eventually bound to wander near the ruins of Conyberry.
Agatha is a reclusive spirit who occasionally trades her immense knowledge for nostalgic mementos or personal favors. In her interactions with travelers, she performed a mournful elvish song—“Lament of the Sehahine”—a sad dirge of the fall of her old home, speaking of the Children of the Moon whose friends betrayed them and whose grace was forsaken. Her grief was so profound that nearby druids and fey attuned to nature could feel her sorrow radiating from the north as a deep, mournful lament mixed with red-hot anger.
She shared vital information regarding her family’s plight, stating that the Elves of the Hand are cursed, her sister Vyldara needs redemption, and her father requires forgiveness. She promised further aid to those who would seek her sister’s last known location in Axeholm. This quest eventually led adventurers to successfully redeem Vyldara’s tormented spirit in the ancient dwarven stronghold of Axeholm, putting her soul to rest, bringing closure to Agatha’s centuries of grief, and paving the way to lift the millennium-old curse on the Hand of Sehanine.
Notable Inhabitants and Encounters
The Mysterious Sorcerer
Beyond the banshee Agatha, the ruined temple of Conyberry recently served as a meeting ground for a mysterious sorcerer bearing a many-headed dragon tattoo. This individual bargained with travelers, trading a massive golden bell valued at 2,500 gold pieces in exchange for their knowledge about the green dragon Virethas (the Jade Queen). When questioned about the mysterious figure known as “The Spider” (Nezznar), the sorcerer lied to protect his association, subsequently vanishing and flying away.
Mikael the Wayward Merchant
During an evening walk within the ruins of Conyberry, travelers rescued Mikael, a wayward merchant who had been mugged and left in distress. The travelers bargained to accompany Mikael back to Phandalin in exchange for a commissioned painting for their estate, Tristan Manor, and his negotiation expertise to help fence the gold melted down from Ioun’s temple bell.
The Dragonborn Ambush
While resting at the ruins of the Temple of Ioun, a watchman encountered a deceptive, small chameleon that revealed itself to be a Green Dragon Wyrmling. The wyrmling was allied with three Dragonborn mercenaries (two green, one white) who launched a sudden, brutal ambush. The attackers utilized holding magic and brute strength in a targeted attempt to steal a unique pendant from the resting adventurer Gilmore—a pendant containing the soulstone of his deceased sister, Elire. Although the party was nearly slain, they ultimately defeated the ambushers, securing a Hat of Disguise, spells of Speak with Dead and Zone of Truth, dragon teeth, scales, and vials of acid from the corpses.
