Kiara Shadowbreaker
Kiara Shadowbreaker is a legendary figure of the Sword Coast and the current ruler of Keoland. She is revered as one of the legendary champions who defended the region during a catastrophic dragon invasion three centuries ago.
The Chromatic Dragon War
Three hundred years before the current era, a coordinated group of Chromatic Dragons launched a devastating campaign across the Sword Coast, laying waste to the rising cities of Neverwinter, Waterdeep, and Baldur’s Gate. In response, the northern settlements unified to form the Lord’s Alliance. Kiara Shadowbreaker, along with a legendary band of heroes, fought at the forefront of the alliance’s armies.
To defeat the draconic threat, Kiara and her companions constructed five powerful dragon masks—one of each chromatic color. These masks granted great power over the dragons, allowing the bearers to influence and even control their minds. Using this power, the party successfully convinced the Black, Red, and Blue dragons to fly away and never return to the northern Sword Coast. The location of these masks was kept strictly secret, with each member hiding their mask so that no single person would know where all five resided. The White mask was eventually buried in Kuldahar within Hrothgar’s empty grave by the shores of Lac Dinneshere.
However, the masks failed against the smartest and most wily of the group, the Green Dragon Virethas, the Jade Queen. Faced with this failure, the heroes confronted the wyrm directly outside Neverwinter. The battle culminated in Virethas’s death at the hands of Lady Tanager Alagondar, who was tragically slain in the process. With their leader dead, the surviving dragons were scattered across the corners of the world: Cryovain (the Everfrost), Skaldreth (the Red Rage), Barakis (the Sandstorm), and Nocturne (the Dread Prince).
Appearance and Identity
According to ancient carvings and murals discovered within the Dragon Barrow, Kiara is a half-elf who wears an eyepatch, leather armor adorned with a Harper pin, and a spyglass secured to her belt.
Revered as the Mistress of the Hunt, Kiara was a prominent member of the Harpers who originally hailed from Keoland. She fought alongside other historic figures of the Sword Coast, including:
- Elminster Aumar, the Sage of Shadowdale
- Lady Tanager Alagondar of Neverwinter
- Hrothgar Hillsfar of Kuldahar (secretly the Firbolg cleric Farwald)
- Esfaloth Nightbreeze, the Fey Touched
- Gorion of Candlekeep
- Uther Vendrock, the Silvered Star
Within the central chamber of the Dragon Barrow, a series of beautiful carvings depicts the historic deeds of these champions:
- The First Mural: Shows five dragons descending headfirst upon the north, with Neverwinter and the Sword Coast in flames.
- The Second Mural: Shows the seven heroes standing in a half-circle, examining a plan on the ground. Kiara is clearly identifiable as a half-elf with her trademark eyepatch, Harper pin, and belt-mounted spyglass.
- The Third Mural: Depicts the climactic battle against Virethas, showing Lady Alagondar driving her sword through the heart of the great green wyrm as a single claw bursts through her chest.
- The Fourth Mural: Details the aftermath of the war, with the four surviving dragons flying away, Esfaloth entering a mystical portal, Kiara and Gorion boarding a ship, and Uther and Elminster standing outside a tomb for Hrothgar alongside a frozen mountain lake with a giant tree.
Aftermath and Recent Developments
Following the conclusion of the Chromatic Dragon War, the heroic coalition splintered. While some retired or faded into legend, ancient carvings depict Kiara Shadowbreaker and Gorion of Candlekeep boarding a ship together, departing the Sword Coast for parts unknown. Kiara eventually returned to her homeland of Keoland, where she currently rules.
In the current era, as the Cult of the Dragon has begun to stir once more, her old ally Farwald (having regained his memories as Hrothgar Hillsfar) cast a Sending spell to contact her. He warned her of the cult’s resurgence, the return of the white and green dragons, and the threat to Neverwinter. Kiara responded to her old comrade that she may know the location of the Red Dragon Mask and promised to quietly investigate its status through one of her local contacts.
