Stork’s Rest

Stork’s Rest is a wind-torn coastal domain situated on the ragged western edge of the Moonshae Islands. It serves as the ancestral seat of the minor noble House of Stork. Far removed from the immediate politics of the Sword Coast, the estate is bound by ancient customs, mainland bloodlines, a bitter legacy of exile, and deep mystical dangers.

Geography and Settlements

Stork’s Rest is a harsh, salt-scoured island composed of rugged bluffs and storm-beaten beaches. The northern half of the island is entirely covered by a deep, ancient, and highly magical forest known to the locals as the Glimmering Deep. Fog blankets this wood even at midday, curling through its ancient oaks. Those who wander too deep beneath its canopies risk losing their minds, quickly forgetting their names, purposes, and the passage of time itself. Fishermen have been known to wander in looking for stray goats and stumble out three days later insisting they were gone mere minutes, while others never return at all. Recently, the forest has shown signs of bracing itself, drawing its trees inward to form a defensive line against powerful external threats.

The Stork family maintains that the forest once housed a portal to an older realm—possibly linked to the ancient druidic powers of Gwynneth.

There are three settled communities and one abandoned port on the island:

History and the Exile of House of Stork

The Stork family did not always reside in the Moonshaes; their bloodline originally traces back to the mainland, specifically the area surrounding the frontier town of Phandalin in the Sword Coast.

Generations ago, Gilmore’s great-grandfather defied the High King of the Moonshaes by marrying a woman tied to coastal raiders and pirate clans, threatening the delicate balance of crown-brokered alliances. Normally punishable by execution, the family was spared because they descended from Lady Tanager Alagondar, the legendary dragonslayer hero who slew the green dragon Virethas (The Jade Queen). Instead of death, the High King banished the entire house to the far western edges of the Moonshaes, hoping the storms, raiders, and the Glimmering Deep would keep them permanently occupied.

Ironically, this exile became an advantage: the coastal pirates respected the Storks for marrying into their kin, leading to lighter raids on their lands. Over three generations, the Storks forged alliances with scattered clans and built considerable influence in the Outer Isles, though the family remains deeply bitter about their loss of status at the High King’s side.

The Beast of the Boundary

When Gilmore’s grandfather was a young man, he was mauled in the Glimmering Deep by a Harthwyld—a monstrous forest guardian described as half-bear, half-stag with sweeping, bone-white antlers. Though mortally wounded, he managed to slay the beast and drag its head back to the village hearth, where the grotesque trophy still hangs. He died that same night. Since then, the Storks have avoided the forest entirely, believing the woods hold a grudge against their bloodline. Other villagers only enter the forest using rope lines and bells to avoid getting lost or changed by its magic.

The Oyster Festival

Every summer solstice, the island hosts the Great Oyster Dive, a boisterous festival where young men dive for oysters in the offshore kelp forests. These oysters absorb the strange magic of the Glimmering Deep, occasionally producing glowing, humming pearls that grant whimsical blessings. These magical pearls are highly valued and sold to Waterdeep merchants as raw magical components. The winning diver receives a ring set with a magic pearl that bestows improbable luck, odd coincidences, sea-colored dreams, and helpful “accidents.”

Despite his father’s horror at participating in a peasant pastime, Gilmore won the contest three years in a row, often traveling to larger islands afterward despite suffering from violent seasickness.

House of Stork and Nobility

The noble house is ruled by Thalorian Stork and Selene Valcorn, who have long harbored bitter hopes of redeeming their name and returning to the mainland or the High King’s court. Key figures of the house include:

Every Stork child is raised with the ancient Oath of the Crown:

“To the High King, to Order and Civilization, against the Chaos of the Sea and the Magic of the Forest.”

While Gilmore respected this order, he felt a deeper pull toward the wilder aspects of the world.

The Ascension Tradition and Elire’s Fate

Stork’s Rest is governed by strict ancestral rites. According to family tradition, if an heir is killed, the next in line cannot ascend to the seat of power until they complete a sacred pilgrimage to retrieve their elder sibling’s body and guarantee their proper passage into the afterlife. Only when this duty is fulfilled may they return to Stork’s Rest to claim their lordship.

Gilmore set out on this pilgrimage to Silverymoon. Finding no remains, he immersed himself in a pool of blood at the temple of the Matron of Ravens (the Raven Queen), swearing herself to her as a Paladin of Death and Fate. He subsequently defeated two red-masked cultists and discovered Elire’s soul was trapped within a purple soulstone pendant.

Rather than encasing the soulstone in Gond’s Smelter to put her to rest as dictated by tradition, Gilmore sought to resurrect his sister. This quest led the party to the Dragon Barrow, where Sidorna the Green Wyrmspeaker sprung a trap. Using Gilmore’s Alagondar bloodline and the stolen soulstone, Sidorna completed a ritual fusing Elire’s soul with the Green Dragon Mask to resurrect the weakened green dragon Virethas (Villathas), the Jade Queen. As she faded, Elire bade a final farewell to her brother. Following this catastrophe, Gilmore couriered a high-priority warning to his parents at Stork’s Rest, urging them to bar their gates, trust no envoys, and watch those who had gained their ear.
