The Era of Divergence is the current epoch of the world, defined by the absolute physical separation between the mortal realm and the divine planes. It is a time of mortal self-reliance, where the great gods are locked behind an impenetrable celestial barrier, and their power can only be felt through the magic channeled by their most devout followers.

Historical Precursors

The Age of Arcanum

Eons before modern recorded history, formless gods arrived at a chaotic world and began to shape it, creating the mortal races—first the elves, then the dwarves, then humans. To aid their creations in surviving this volatile world, the gods bestowed small slivers of their own essence upon them, giving birth to magic. This sparked the Age of Arcanum, a golden age of centuries-long prosperity, incredible innovation, and peerless magical advancement. However, this unchecked progress ultimately bred arrogance, driving some mortal wizards and kings to seek godhood and absolute power.

The Calamity

This hubris culminated in The Calamity, a catastrophic, world-spanning war. Though its exact catalyst is lost to myth, it quickly escalated into a magical arms race involving both mortals and their creators. A bitter schism split the divine pantheon:

• The Betrayer Gods: Deities who wished to completely enslave or destroy the mortal races, believing they could not be trusted with free will or the dangerous power of magic.
• The Prime Deities: Deities who stood in defense of their mortal creations, maintaining faith that their children would ultimately find their way.

The resulting battles devastated the world. The magnificent, floating magical cities of the Age of Arcanum were utterly shattered, its great civilizations reduced to ash, and the natural landscape left scorched and barren.

The Divine Gate

Realizing the horrific destruction their unchecked physical presence had brought upon the Material Plane, the Prime Deities chose to make a profound sacrifice. They constructed the Divine Gate, a powerful barrier designed to forever lock themselves and the Betrayer Gods away from the mortal world. By doing so, they protected their creations from divine ruin, though they surrendered their own ability to ever physically return to the Material Plane.

Celestial Signs of the Era

To those living in the Era of Divergence, the defining feature of the night sky is a prominent, long line of stars stretching across the middle of the horizon, widely believed to symbolize the Divine Gate itself. This celestial formation is a historical marker; ancient astrological maps dating back 1,000 years to the Age of Arcanum—a time when the goddess Selune still physically walked the earth—do not contain this line of stars, showing how the cosmos was permanently altered by the transition into the current age.
