Gruumsh
Gruumsh, widely feared as The Ruiner, is the dark God of slaughter within the pantheon of the cosmos. Classified among the Betrayer Gods, his worship is kept hidden, as his influence is viewed by the public as destructive, violent, and inherently harmful. Despite this dread reputation, theological scholars note that even ruinous forces like Gruumsh hold a place in the ultimate balance of the world.
The Calamity and the Betrayer Schism
During the mythic era known as the Age of Arcanum, the mortal races flourished and achieved unprecedented magical innovations. However, this progress bred unchecked pride, ultimately leading to a global conflict of divine proportions known as The Calamity.
During this war, a severe schism divided the deities:
- The Prime Deities sought to protect their mortal creations, believing they had the capacity to find their own way.
- The Betrayer Gods (including Gruumsh, Asmodeus, Bane, and Lolth) wished to completely destroy or enslave the mortal races, believing they could not be trusted with free will or the power of magic.
Gruumsh’s destructive ambitions were carried out by hordes of followers. During the final years of the war, the legendary blacksmith Gond recorded that “orcish, undead and other armies led by the Betrayers” marched across the north of the Sword Coast, eventually destroying civilizations like the Pact of Phandelver.
The Calamity ended when the Prime Deities sacrificed their ability to walk the physical world, constructing the Divine Gate to seal themselves and the Betrayer Gods behind a permanent barrier.
