Sildar Hallwinter

Sildar Hallwinter is a seasoned traveler, a Griffin Knight (also spelled Griffon Knight) of Neverwinter, and a close associate of the dwarf Gundren Rockseeker, operating along the dangerous frontier of the Sword Coast. Dedicated to the safety of the region, he is a fixer and retired soldier for the Lord’s Alliance, often sporting his armor and the proud Tabard of Neverwinter.

Connections to Noble Houses

Before setting out on his fateful journey, Sildar spent time in Neverwinter, where he crossed paths with Gilmore, the second son of the minor noble House of Stork from Stork’s Rest in the Moonshae Islands. Sildar, an old friend of the Stork family, recognized his friend’s need for safe passage toward Phandalin—the historical home of the Stork family bloodline. Sildar informed Gilmore of a supply caravan departing Neverwinter the following morning, prompting Gilmore to join the expedition.

The Lord’s Alliance and the Secret Mission

While in Neverwinter, Sildar’s duties as a Lord’s Alliance operative aligned with the goals of Gundren Rockseeker. Sildar was overheard by Er’evyn Sehahine—an undercover agent of the Zhentarim who was training under Lucian Nightshade—discussing a major discovery with Gundren. The dwarf spoke of having “found something big” (which would be revealed as the lost Forge of Spells) and needing supplies and hired guards to escort the cargo to Phandalin. Sildar readily agreed to assist, noting that the Lord’s Alliance was deeply concerned about suspicious happenings and rising dangers in the southern frontier. Er’evyn reported this conversation to Nightshade, leading the spy to infiltrate the caravan as well.

The Journey from Neverwinter

In the grand city of Neverwinter, Sildar and Gundren hired a band of adventurers—who would later become known as “The Magnificent Five” or “The Fantastic Five”—for what was intended to be a simple job: escorting a supply cart south along the High Road to the frontier settlement of Phandalin. The pair promised a reward of gold to the adventurers upon the safe delivery of the provisions to Barthen, a local merchant. Seeking to make swift progress, Sildar and Gundren rode ahead of the main wagon on horseback.

The Goblin Ambush and Rescue

Sildar’s journey was violently interrupted when the pair turned east toward Phandalin. They were ambushed by goblins, and their horses were slain in the skirmish. Sildar and Gundren were captured and dragged to the nearby Cragmaw Hideout.

Deep within the cave, Sildar was held hostage by three goblins under the direct command of Klarg, a brute of a bugbear acting on orders from a mysterious figure known as “the Spider” (Nezznar, a Drider). The hired adventurers tracked the trail to the hideout and initiated a chaotic battle. Using clever tactics and magic, the party defeated Klarg and his goblin minions, successfully rescuing Sildar. Battered but deeply grateful, Sildar was helped to his feet, and the party escorted him safely onward to Phandalin.

Recovery and the Council of Phandalin

Upon arriving in Phandalin, Sildar rested at the Stonehill Inn and recovered from his severe wounds. Soon after, he donned his armor and the Tabard of Neverwinter once again to take an active role in the town’s defense. He joined a makeshift council in Townmaster Harbin Wester’s office alongside the midwife Aadabra Gwynn and the blind cleric Deacon.

During these tense discussions, the council debated how to handle the myriad threats besieging the region, including the sudden return of the white dragon Cryovain. Sildar noted that the city of Neverwinter was in no position to send aid, as they could barely feed themselves following a devastating magical plague known as the Wailing Death. Sildar remained a key figure in debating the town’s next steps, including the potential utilization of the legendary Spell Forge.

Rescuing Gundren Rockseeker

While Gundren Rockseeker had been taken to Cragmaw Castle (the ancient, ruined human seat of Highthorn from the days of the Pact of Phandelver) on the orders of the Spider, Sildar eventually succeeded in tracking him down. Following the adventurers’ defeat of the Spider at Wave Echo Cave and the subsequent scattering of the goblin forces, Sildar was able to locate Cragmaw Castle, rescue his companion Gundren, and bring him safely back to Phandalin just in time for the Highharvesttide festival. Sildar relayed all of the group’s dramatic deeds to Gundren upon his rescue, leaving the dwarf deeply grateful to the heroes.

Post-Campaign Legacy and Recommendation

Following the successful reclamation of the Forge of Spells and the pacification of the region around Phandalin, Sildar continued to support the heroes. Recognizing their immense contributions, Sildar provided them with an official letter of introduction marked with his seal as a Griffin Knight of the City of Neverwinter. This letter proved to be of immense political value; when the heroes were confronted by Lady Arabeth de Tylmarande—the chief of staff to Lord Nasher Alagondar—at the ruins of Dragon Barrow, presenting Sildar’s sealed recommendation softened her suspicious stance. Rather than arresting them for grave-robbing, she granted the group an audience with the Small Council of Neverwinter, offering them access to influential political spheres and potential favors from those loyal to the Lord’s Alliance.

Wartime Mobilization and Recall

As a formal declaration of war erupted between Neverwinter and Luskan, the military situation grew critical. Sildar was officially recalled to active duty with the Griffon Knights—the elite special forces and griffin riders of Neverwinter. Due to this urgent military redeployment and the heavy wartime preparations consuming the city, Sildar has become temporarily unreachable to his adventuring allies as he helps marshal forces against the looming threat of Luskan’s undead navy.
