The Moonshae Isles
The Moonshae Isles (frequently called the Moonshaes or Moonshae Islands) are a remote, rugged archipelago situated off the Sword Coast, characterized by their isolation from the mainland and their position among stormy seas and rugged, untamed wilds.
Noble Houses and Regional Traditions: House Stork
Within the archipelago lies Stork’s Rest, a wind-torn island of rugged bluffs, storm beaches, and a deep magical forest on the ragged western edge of the Moonshaes. This island serves as the ancestral seat of the minor noble house of Stork.
Generations ago, the Storks were banished to this far western rock by the High King of the Moonshaes after Gilmore’s great-grandfather defied the crown by marrying a woman tied to coastal raiders and pirate clans. While normally a capital offense, their lives were spared because of their descent from Lady Tanager Alagondar, the legendary dragonslayer whose shrine still draws pilgrims. Though the family built strong alliances with the pirate clans of the Outer Isles, they remain bitter about their exile from the High King’s court. Although the Stork family made their home in the Moonshaes, their ancient bloodline originally traces back to the Phandalin region on the mainland.
The house was recently marked by tragedy when Elire, the daughter of Thalorian Stork and Selene Valcorn, was assassinated by cultists wearing red dragon masks. Elire had been highly educated—with tutors from Alaron, rare books from Waterdeep, and a position in the elven academies of Silverymoon—in hopes of restoring the family’s titles and solving the secrets of their island. Her soul was captured in a soulstone and later fused with the green dragon Villathas (the Jade Queen) during a dark ritual on the mainland.
According to Stork family traditions, when an elder sibling is slain, the next in line—in this case, her strong-willed younger brother Gilmore—must embark on a quest to retrieve the sibling’s remains and ensure their safe passage to the afterlife before they can ascend to the seat of power. Every Stork child is raised on a solemn oath:
“To the High King, to Order and Civilization, against the Chaos of the Sea and the Magic of the Forest.”
Gilmore Stork, however, never took the oath too seriously, feeling the pull of the wild. Though the sea made him violently seasick when taking the ferry to larger islands, he loved it, and while the forest terrified him, it fascinated him.
Geography and Settlements of Stork’s Rest
Stork’s Rest features three living communities and one abandoned port:
- Pink Tor (Southern Coast): The main settlement, named for a pink-granite bluff that glows at sunrise. It contains the ferry landing, the pink tower where the Stork family resides, the Stork library, and the island’s sole proper tavern.
- Wraithcliff: A hardy farming village located along gentler bays, acting as a small port connecting the island to the barley-producing islands of the western chain.
- Dunfold: The humblest village, populated primarily by potato farmers and goat herders who utilize a rough pier.
- Greyhaven: An abandoned northern port, now a decaying skeleton of broken piers swallowed by fog and forest magic. Any ships attempting to approach are driven away by whispers and illusions.
The Glimmering Deep & The Harthwyld
Covering the entire northern half of Stork’s Rest is the Glimmering Deep, an ancient, fog-shrouded oak forest that locals fear to speak of. The forest is deeply magical and disorienting; those who enter lose their sense of time, purpose, and memory. The Stork family believes the forest once hid an ancient portal to an older realm—possibly a relic of the druidic powers of Gwynneth—but its heart warps all who enter.
The Storks have avoided the woods entirely since Gilmore’s grandfather was mortally mauled by a Harthwyld—a monstrous forest guardian described as half-bear, half-stag with bone-white antlers. Though he slew the beast and dragged its head to hang above the family hearth, he died that night, leaving the family convinced the woods harbor a dark grudge against their bloodline. Villagers who dare enter the forest do so only with bells and rope lines.
The Great Oyster Dive
Every summer solstice, the island hosts the Great Oyster Dive. Young men dive into the kelp forests to retrieve oysters that have absorbed the strange magic of the Glimmering Deep. These oysters yield magical pearls that glow, hum, or grant whimsical blessings, which are often sold to merchants from Waterdeep. The winning diver receives a ring set with a magic pearl, conferring improbable luck, sea-colored dreams, and helpful coincidences. Gilmore Stork famously won this contest three years in a row, much to his father Thalorian’s chagrin.
The Island of Mintarn
Mintarn is a lively, trade-based island within the Moonshaes, inhabited by a diverse array of races and cultures.
History of Dragons: The Red Rage
Three centuries ago, a devastating coalition of chromatic dragons attacked the cities of the Sword Coast, laying waste to much of the North. In response, the Lord’s Alliance was formed to drive them back. Among these threats was Skaldreth, the Red Rage, a red dragon who was pushed back to the west, finding refuge in the Moonshae Isles before disappearing. Cultists of the Dragon continue to seek out these ancient dragons in their hidden lairs.
Zhentarim Jurisdiction and the Shadow Network
The Black Network of the Zhentarim extends its reach even to these remote islands, though its operations are heavily regionalized. The network is divided among several key regional commanders:
- The Pereghost — The Moonshae Isles
- Lucian Nightshade — Neverwinter
- Nezznar the Spider — The Underdark
- Jamra Gleamsilver — Waterdeep
The Disappearance of the Pereghost
Though the Zhentarim projects an image of unified power, it has been plagued by a severe internal schism. The Pereghost, the Zhentarim’s commander in the Moonshae Isles, has recently been reported missing.
Internal Schisms and Secret Wars
Chapter leaders and high-ranking operatives, such as Halia Thorton of Phandalin, have been forced to play rival factions of the Zhentarim off each other. The mysterious disappearance of the Pereghost has only added to the instability and uncertainty within the faction’s ranks.
