The Throat of the World

The Throat of the World is a legendary, ice-rimed northern region and mountain domain. It is most famous as the desolate sanctuary where Cryovain, the Everfrost—one of the great chromatic dragons of the Sword Coast—was driven following his defeat by the armies of the Lord’s Alliance.

History and the Dragon Wars

Three centuries ago, a terrifying coalition of chromatic dragons coordinated a devastating assault on the rising cities of the North, including Luskan, Neverwinter, Waterdeep, and Baldur’s Gate. In response, these civilized factions united to form the Lord’s Alliance to push back the draconic threat.

While the green dragon Virethas, the Jade Queen, was slain outside Neverwinter, the other great dragons were scattered and driven to the far corners of the world:

• To the North (Throat of the World): Cryovain, the Everfrost
• Other Survivors: Skaldreth, the Red Rage; Barakis, the Sandstorm; and Nocturne, the Dread Prince.

For three hundred years, the Throat of the World served as the frozen exile of Cryovain, keeping the white dragon silent in the histories of the North.

The Return of the Everfrost

In recent times, the long silence of the Throat of the World has ended. Cryovain has emerged from his frozen northern roost, casting a massive, freezing shadow over the Sword Mountains. Witnesses describe the dragon as a vast, serpentine beast carved from living frost, with scales resembling jagged ice plates and a roar capable of cracking glaciers.

According to divine revelations from the altar of Ioun, the Knowing Mistress, Cryovain’s ultimate ambition is to “create winter everywhere.” The Cult of the Dragon actively seeks out Cryovain and the other surviving chromatic dragons to crown them anew as lords of the north.
