Overview

Jamra Gleamsilver is a high-ranking operative and chapter leader within the Zhentarim (commonly known as the Zhent), an ancient and secretive guild of spies, thieves, and smugglers. Stationed in Waterdeep, the grandest and most influential metropolis along the Sword Coast, Gleamsilver oversees the Black Network’s operations within the city, carrying out clandestine affairs under the guild’s emblem of a dragon swallowing a moon.

The Wailing Death Correspondence

Jamra’s reach and coordination with other northern Zhentarim cells were active well before the internal fracturing of the guild. During the devastating Wailing Death plague that afflicted Neverwinter, a young half-elf named Erëvan (Erevyn) Sehahine infiltrated the cellar of Neverwinter’s chapter leader, Lucian Nightshade. There, he discovered a highly sensitive letter dispatched from Waterdeep.

Signed with the initials “J. G.” and sealed with the Zhentarim’s signature mark of a dragon swallowing a moon, the letter revealed that a cure for the Wailing Death had been found. It detailed that the cure could be synthesized from four magical creatures, which were already en route to Neverwinter. This correspondence underscores Gleamsilver’s vital role in managing high-stakes crisis intelligence and coordinating critical logistical operations between the great cities of the Lord’s Alliance.

The Zhentarim Schism

Jamra’s identity and position as one of the cornerstone leaders of the network were later confirmed posthumously by Halia Thorton, the Spymistress of Phandalin. Following Halia’s death, a magical, dragon-shaped amulet—carved with its wing bent inward and holding a small moon in its mouth—was left upon her gravestone. When approached by Erevyn, the amulet unfurled its wings and projected a final warning message. The projection detailed a deep schism splitting the Zhentarim from within and explicitly identified major regional chapter leaders:

Halia warned Erevyn that he must choose a side in the looming internal conflict, trusting him to prevent their network’s powerful secrets from falling into the wrong hands.

During the outbreak of war between Neverwinter and Luskan, the severity of this internal divide became even more pronounced. Lucian Nightshade revealed to Erevyn that communication with the Waterdeep chapter had effectively stalled. Although “Jamrash” (as Gleamsilver is also known) repeatedly insisted that “all is well” in the southern metropolis, the Waterdeep cell had not been in actual, verified contact with Neverwinter’s operatives for months. This suspicious wall of silence strongly suggests that Gleamsilver’s network has either been compromised or is actively isolating itself amid the guild’s collapse.

Conflict and Disdain from the Underdark

The internal divide within the Zhentarim is further illuminated by the personal journals of Nezznar the Spider, the rogue chapter leader of the Underdark. Nezznar, who allied with the Cult of the Dragon to secure his own dominion, anticipated heavy opposition from the northern leaders, specifically naming Gleamsilver, Thorton, and Nightshade as forces aligned against him.

Nezznar harbored deep disdain for Gleamsilver and his counterparts, writing them off as compromised by their environments. He believed that their prolonged residence within the civilized metropolises of the Lord’s Alliance had rendered them soft and lacking in ambition, contrasting their perceived weakness with his own ruthless designs to rule the Underdark.
