The Sword Coast
The Sword Coast is a land of stark contrasts, where fragile pockets of civilization struggle to survive amidst vast, untamed wilds. Defined by ragged cliffs, stormy seas, and dangerous trade routes, it is a region heavily shadowed by the history and ambitions of long-gone kings and mages. It is a realm etched by blade and spell, where legends linger in the ruins of ancient empires and every shadow holds a whisper of something forgotten. From the windswept glaciers of Icewind Dale to the sun-bleached shores of Serpentwind Coast, adventure awaits those daring enough to tread its paths.
Geography & Settlements
- The Spine of the World: Marking the northern boundary of the coast, this mountain range is characterized by sharp and jagged cliffs. In the frozen expanse of Icewind Dale near these peaks lies Kuldahar, a secret Firbolg settlement built around an enormous world tree. This tree was created by Diancastra, the favored daughter of Annam the All-Father, to exist outside the constraints of the giant “ordin.” The settlement and its tree are protected by giant-kin, particularly Firbolgs, who live under the guidance of clan clerics (or skalds) preaching a balance between Othea (the mother goddess of nature and home), Diancastra (goddess of trickery), and Torvik (the clans’ name for Ulutiu, the sleeping father of giant-kin and god of ice, wind, and anarchy).
- Waterdeep: Serving as a massive center of trade, Waterdeep is the largest city on the Sword Coast. It is the home of legendary figures like Elminster Aumar, the Sage of Waterdeep (also known as the Sage of Shadowdale), who is one of the leaders of the Harpers and resides here when not traveling. It plays host to various figures of note, including Jamra Gleamsilver, a chapter leader of the Zhentarim, and was one of the historic strongholds of the Lord’s Alliance.
- Neverwinter: Known as the “Jewel of the North” and located on the northern stretch of the Coast, it was named for the geothermal springs that feed its river. Its City Core features active dockyards, busy smiths, and the aroma of fresh bakeries. It remains the only real bastion of civilized folk in the North before the Spine of the World. The city continues to struggle to tame the surrounding wild frontier while recovering from the “Wailing Death,” a devastating magical plague that afflicted its population a year ago. Lord Nashar Alagondar currently rules the city from Castle Never, assisted by a small council. Key city districts include:
- The Docks District: A bustling area where ships unload lumber and wartime supplies under heavy preparations for a brewing war with Luskan. It is the home of Yeva and Ophelia, Erevyn’s sister.
- The Market District: Featuring the luxurious Moonstone Mask, which hosts lavish gatherings, including “end of the world” parties.
- The Temple District: Home to the quiet Emerald Grove, a sanctuary featuring a beautiful, giant Oak tree cared for by Nimiriel Nightbreeze of the Emerald Enclave. The grove recently served as a refuge for starving children during food shortages, aided by Nalini and Farwald.
- The Neverwinter Council: Lord Nasher’s small council is composed of:
- Aribeth De Tylmarande: Captain of the Guard and Lord Nasher’s Right Hand. An elven paladin of Erathis, she was the sole survivor of an orc raid on her home village of Thundertree in her youth. Rescued in a blizzard by a one-armed avatar of Erathis, she trained to become a paladin and became the first woman and non-human to receive a seat on the council.
- Lucien Nightshade (also known as Lucien Nightstone): Spymaster of Neverwinter and local leader of the Zhentarim, residing in a manor in the Blacklake District.
- Archmage Vael Tarmyth: The city’s high-level magic advisor, who rarely attends council meetings.
- Count Gelden Allfield: The city’s treasurer, known for constantly complaining about the lack of available funds.
- Aldis Trueshot: Captain and Master at Arms for Neverwinter.
- Finster Lionheart: Admiral and Shipmaster.
- Baldur’s Gate & Silverymoon: Historic cities of the North that bound themselves together with Neverwinter and Waterdeep to form the Lord’s Alliance 300 years ago. In Silverymoon, Gilmore visited the temple of the Matron of Ravens, immersing himself in a pool of blood to gain a vision of the Raven Queen. It also houses elven boarding schools where noble daughters like Elire Stork were sent to learn high elven court manners.
- Luskan: A northern city, known as the “City of Sails,” that chose to pay tribute to the invading chromatic dragons rather than join the Lord’s Alliance. Rumors circulate that Luskan was behind the Wailing Death plague, prompting Neverwinter to marshal its forces north for a brewing conflict.
- The High Road: A key travel and trade route running south along the coast from Neverwinter, leading towards Phandalin. The Magnificent Five traveled this road to escort a wagon of goods to Phandalin at the behest of Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter.
- Helm’s Hold: A fortified temple-monastery on the road to Neverwinter dedicated to Erathis, the Lawbearer. Priests, including the halfling cleric Sandra, provide Lesser Restoration and spiritual services in exchange for coin or favors (and diamond dust). The fortress is heavily warded against fey and otherworldly creatures, preventing beings like Nalini from entering. The party was banned after Erevyn carved “ACAB” into the wall with his thieves’ tools.
- Dragon Barrow: Located along the road to Neverwinter, this site is overseen by the Green Wyrmspeaker, Sidorna. It is not a standard dungeon or mound, but rather the skeletal remains of the ancient green dragon Virethas, the Jade Queen. Its bone-white stalagmites are ribs, and its acid pools are pure poison. Lady Tanager Alagondar was buried here alongside her legendary sword, Dragon Slayer (a +1 greatsword dealing an additional 3d6 damage against dragons), which she used to slay Virethas. The sword was magically bound with a ward preventing Virethas’s resurrection, which could only be lifted by the blood of an Alagondar. When Gilmore drew the sword, he triggered a paralysis trap that froze Nalini, allowing Sidorna to initiate a dark resurrection ritual. The ritual used the soulstone of Gilmore’s sister Elire (who revealed herself to be a high-ranking cultist) as a sacrifice, returning Virethas as a weakened Adult Green Dragon fused with Elire’s soul and the Green Dragon Mask. The party escaped the collapsing cavern—now known as Gilmore’s Folly—through a massive exit painted by Farwald using Nolzur’s Magnificent Pigments. Lady Aribeth de Tylmarande and her Griffin Riders arrived to investigate the smoking crater shortly after.
- The Sword Mountains: A snow-blasted mountain range home to historic sites such as the Snowmont Monastery. The monastery was recently devastated by Ice Trolls and Ice Mephits. While local defenders Clarissa and Dorian perished in the assault, two surviving monks—Jaque (a halfling) and Zoe (an elf)—gifted their defenders with a Pearl of Power, a Staff of Frost, and a Wind Fan. The white dragon Cryovain has returned to make his home in the highest peaks of this range.
- Phandalin: A weary frontier town nestled in the Phandalin Valley. It has lately been beset by Redbrand ruffians. Key local locations include:
- The Stonehill Inn: Kept by the halfling Toblen and his gossiping wife Trilena. It is where the party gathered for lunch to plan their next moves.
- The Sleeping Giant Inn: Featuring a makeshift fighting ring in its basement where the local adventurer Hope once earned gold.
- The Lionshield Coster: Managed by Linene Graywind, who handles trade and recently paid the party for recovering stolen goods from goblin raiders.
- Local Administration: Overseen by the overwhelmed Townmaster Harbin Wester and his sole guard, Reckon. Local allies include Sildar Hallwinter (a recovered defender of Neverwinter who proudly wears his armor and Tabard of Neverwinter), Aadabra Gwynn (a midwife, miller, and follower of Melora, the Wildmother), and Deacon (a blind, retired adventurer, cleric of Avandra—the Goddess of Luck, Chance, and Journeys, and patron saint of Travelers and Gamblers).
- Highharvesttide: The last day of summer, celebrated in Phandalin with vibrant banners, paper lanterns, pie-eating contests, tug-of-war, and fortune-telling by Deacon. It was here that the local heroes were widely hailed as savior figures.
- Tristan Manor: An old manor in Phandalin, recently bequeathed by Myrna Tristan to the adventurers known as “The Magnificent Five” (also referred to as the “Fantastic Five”) via a magical deed handled by Harbin Wester. Its dining room was briefly infested with zombies before they were dispatched. Its crypts once held the legendary Blade of Tristan (which chose Gilmore, whose noble family of House Stork is related to the Tristans). Its cellars served as an alchemical study and the secret headquarters of the Redbrands and their leader, the wizard Glasstaff (Iarno), who had been bribed by the Spider with a fancy staff and gold to turn his back on his Neverwinter masters. In an infiltration, Gilmore brazenly joined a poker game with the bandits, drinking three of them under the table while his companions rescued the captive Tristan family. Erevyn shot the staff out of Glasstaff’s hand, and the party defeated a Half-Ogre. They secured several magical items here, including the Glasstaff itself, a Bag of Holding, and the historical tome The Rise and Fall of the Pact of Phandelver.
- Conyberry: A ruined settlement along the road containing the domain of the ancient banshee Agatha and an abandoned temple of Ioun. The temple once housed a massive golden bell, which was melted down by Farwald and Nalini and fenced with the aid of the wayward merchant Mikael (whom Gilmore rescued from distress on an evening walk) for 2,600 gold in exchange for a commissioned painting for their manor. At the temple’s altar, the party received visions detailing the location of Cragmaw Castle, Cryovain’s elemental desires, and the magical manipulation of Farwald’s mind.
- Neverwinter Wood: A vast forest where the Neverwinter River flows. It is the home of Reidoth the Druid, who has been actively harassing local logging camps to allow nature to reclaim the land. Historically, the wood was also where King Phandelver II led the first wave of human settlers. Recently, the forest was locked away from the world by a furious Druid named Esfaloth, with trees moving inward to form an impenetrable defensive line.
- Gnomengarde: A gnomish settlement renowned for crafting ingenious magical items and clever contraptions, operating beyond a waterfall in symbiosis with subterranean Myconids. It runs under King Korboz (who was temporarily paralyzed by fear and tied up his beloved King Gnerki due to a doppelganger infiltration) and features inventors Dimblestib and Dabbledob, alongside the young healer Linxie. The unique local magical Weave causes erratic side effects when casting spells. During a visit by Nalini, Gilmore, and Farwald (while their allies camped outside), they unmasked a doppelganger disguised as a cheerful, wine-bearing gnome woman, slaying one while the other escaped. The party was rewarded with a celebration, fireworks, and discounted gnomish inventions at the local tavern, The Uppanddown.
- Wave Echo Cave: The legendary, long-lost cavern that houses the fabled Spell Forge and Gond’s Smelter. It connects to a network of bioluminescent mushrooms and Myconid spores, and was recently defiled by the Spider and his forces. The Spider turned the ancient Altar of Moradin (the All-Hammer) into an Altar to Lolth (Lloth), and it is where the lifeless body of Halia Thorton was left hanging in the entryway.
- Cragmaw Castle & Cragmaw Hideout: Dark strongholds of goblins and bugbears located to the north of Phandalin. The hideout was commanded by the bugbear Klarg, who intercepted Gundren Rockseeker on the Spider’s orders. An ancient wall carving inside the hideout depicts the Pact of Phandelver. Cragmaw Castle (historically known as Highthorn) was ruled by Blarg (the bugbear leader who declared himself King of Cragmaw), who captured Gundren Rockseeker and seized his map. Gundren was eventually rescued from the castle by Sildar Hallwinter after the goblins dispersed following the Spider’s defeat, arriving back in Phandalin with an alarming bandage on his arm and throat.
- Stork’s Rest: The ancestral seat of House Stork, situated on the rugged western edge of the Moonshae Isles. It is a wind-torn shard of bluffs, storm beaches, and a deep magical forest called the Glimmering Deep, where people quickly forget their names and time itself. The Storks were exiled here generations ago by the High King of the Moonshaes after Gilmore’s great-grandfather married a pirate clan. The island features three settled communities: Pink Tor (southern coast, housing the ferry landing, the Storks’ Pink Tower, library, and the island’s only tavern), Wraithcliff, and Dunfold, while the northern port of Greyhaven lies abandoned and swallowed by forest-magic. It is famous for its summer solstice Great Oyster Dive, where divers seek magical glowing pearls that grant luck and sea-colored dreams.
History & Ancient Secrets
- The Age of Arcanum & The Calamity: Eons before recorded history, formless gods tamed the primordial chaos and birthed the mortal races, gifting them magic. During the prosperous Age of Arcanum, mortal arrogance led to a devastating magical arms race known as The Calamity. This conflict between the Betrayer Gods and the Prime Deities left the world scorched and resulted in the creation of the Divine Gate, a barrier sealing the gods from the Material Plane. In Wave Echo Cave, the sky of the Age of Arcanum is projected on the ceiling, displaying a night sky from 1,000 years ago when Selune (the Moon) walked the earth. The stars rearrange into three constellations: a hand, a great castle, and a jeweled hammer.
- The Pact of Phandelver: An ancient tripartite treaty linking three legendary ruins, chronicled in the tome The Rise and Fall of the Pact of Phandelver by Elminster Aumar:
- The Hand of Sehanine: An elven tower and temple of knowledge shaped like an outstretched splayed hand, located near the ruins of Leilon. It was once the seat of Archmage Larellion. During the fall of the Pact, Larellion attempted to save his people from invading orc hordes and rogue mages by casting the Mythil of Moonshadow (Mythal of Moonbow) to shift the fortress into the Ethereal Plane. Angered by the elves’ abandonment of their allies, Sehanine Moonbow and Corellon twisted the mythal into a divine curse, freezing the inhabitants in repeating loops and turning Larellion into a mad Baelnorn whose soul was bound to the tower as his phylactery. The curse was recently broken by the Magnificent Five, who brought repentance and peace to Larellion by laying his daughters’ spirits to rest, receiving the Astrolabe of Sehanine as a reward. During this confrontation, Farwald was temporarily slain by the Baelnorn’s green arrow but resurrected through Nalini’s life-transfer and Gilmore’s invocation of his sister Elire’s soulstone.
- Axeholm: A prideful dwarven stronghold and seat of Queen Kima, known for her stubborn pride and love of finely crafted warhammers. Axeholm fell due to the actions of Larellion’s daughter, Vyldara Sehanine, who was jealous of her sister Agatha. Seeking to impress her father, she infiltrated Axeholm, sowed civil unrest, and poisoned Queen Kima with a slow, agonizing venom. When captured, she resisted, slaying six dwarven guards before being cut down. Denied entry to the afterlife, she rose as a banshee, turning the stronghold’s residents into undead and forcing its abandonment. It was recently liberated by the Magnificent Five, aided by the fey sorceress Aja (a powerful magic-user temporarily trapped in the form of a talking goat who blasted the gates open with lightning). Gilmore severed the connection of Vyldara’s spirit, allowing her soul to be guided to the afterlife by the Matron of Ravens, who appeared as a masked woman in a raven-feather cloak to take young Vyldara to her mother.
- Highthorn: Now known as Cragmaw Castle, it was the summer seat of the Pact’s human king, King Phandelver II, who brokered the original alliance. It featured turrets wreathed in ivy and served as a cultural melting pot before being sacked.
- Gotrek: An ancient dwarf petrified for 1,000 years who was recently freed by the party. He provided firsthand accounts of living under the Pact before gifting his cursed Berserker’s Axe to Hope. The curse was later cleansed by Farwald and the strange academic gnome Dusty.
- Gond’s Smelter & The Forge of Spells: The crowning creation of the Pact of Phandelver, built with the ingenuity of the Gnomes of the Vale. Gond was actually not a deity, but a legendary craftsman dwarf of the Age of Arcanum who served as the blacksmith of the forge. Gond’s Smelter requires three keys to activate: the Mettle of the Dwarves (ore from the caves), the Grace of the Elves (associated with Selune and activated via the Moonbeam spell, correcting a historical mistranslation of “Elvish Tears”), and the Ingenuity of the Humans (blue-burning wood). The Spell Forge itself is protected by “The Blacksmith,” an enormous metal guardian created by Gond operating at 78% power. The Magnificent Five defeated “The Blacksmith” by disrupting its pylons, earning powerful treasures: the Plate of the Pact, Cabal’s Ruin, the Circlet of Larrelion, Nolzur’s Magnificent Pigments, and a Deck of Many Things.
- The Dragon Wars: Three centuries ago, a unified league of chromatic dragons laid waste to much of the North. In response, the Lord’s Alliance pushed them back. This triumph was achieved by a legendary band of heroes: Elminster Aumar, Lady Tanager Alagondar of Neverwinter, Hrothgar Hillsfar (who was actually Farwald of Kuldahar), Esfaloth Nightbreeze (the Fey Touched, carrying a longbow with a bird), Gorion of Candlekeep (a rotund Zhentarim scribe with a lute), Kiara Shadowbreaker (Mistress of the Hunt, a Harper of Keoland), and Uther Vendrock (the Silvered Star, a Platinum Dragon dwarf buried on Stormwreck Isle). To defeat the dragons, the heroes constructed five magical Dragon Masks, one of each color, which allowed the bearer to influence and control a dragon of that color. Using the masks, they convinced the Black (Nocturne, the Dread Prince), Red (Skaldreth, the Red Rage), and Blue (Barakis, the Sandstorm) dragons to fly away. The White dragon (Cryovain, the Everfrost) was magically bound and buried in Hrothgar’s empty grave by the shores of Lac Dinneshear, near Kuldahar. The Green dragon Virethas (the Jade Queen) resisted the masks and was slain outside Neverwinter by Lady Tanager Alagondar, who perished alongside the beast.
- The Mind of Farwald: The elderly storyteller Farwald was revealed to be the legendary hero Hrothgar Hillsfar. After the Dragon Wars, Hrothgar sought to protect Kuldahar’s secret Firbolg community and his family from dragon vengeance. He asked Elminster Aumar to cast a powerful version of Modify Memory and True Polymorph on him, sealing his true identity and memories. These memories were unlocked by the mind-mage Grizelda and fully restored by the cleric Sandra at Helm’s Hold, allowing him to reclaim his true form as a 3.2-meter-tall Firbolg with grey-blue skin, wild dark hair, cow-like ears, runic tattoos, and lichen-covered arms. He serves as a cleric of Torvik, the sleeping giant-god of ice, wind, and anarchy.

Threats and Inhabitants
- The Spider: A mysterious, shadowy mastermind revealed to be Nezznar, a Drider (a fallen Drow, half spider and half dark elf). He defiled the ancient altar of Moradin into an altar to Lolth, using Phase Spiders to communicate with the “Wyrmspeaker.” Nezznar conspired with the Cult of the Dragon, exchanging the surface for Underdark control, and kept a secret journal tracking his alliance with the “Jade Wyrmspeaker” (Sidorna) and his frustration with Glasstaff and the “Five.” He was killed in Wave Echo Cave by the Magnificent Five, with Erevyn delivering the final blow through his eye.
- The Zhentarim: An ancient guild of spies, thieves, and smugglers, currently split by an internal factional schism between those seeking rehabilitation (led by Lucian Nightshade in Neverwinter) and a more violent, rogue faction. Their symbol, a dragon swallowing a moon, was found carved on various crates, walls, and on a recording amulet left on Halia Thorton’s grave. Chapter leaders include:
- Lucian Nightshade (Neverwinter)
- Nezznar the Spider (The Underdark)
- Jamra Gleamsilver (Waterdeep)
- The Pereghost (The Moonshae Isles - currently missing)
- The Dragonborn Cultists & Cult of the Dragon: A hostile band of Dragonborn and human zealots serving chromatic dragons. They utilized a green dragon wyrmling disguised as a chameleon to track rare artifacts, including a family pendant belonging to the noble Gilmore, which held the soulstone of his deceased sister, Elire. The Cult seeks to raise Virethas as a Dracolich. They have been hunting for the hidden Dragon Masks. The Jade Wyrmspeaker (Sidorna) led their efforts in Dragon Barrow.
- Monstrous Dangers: Dragons, giants, and demons haunt the wilderness.
- Cryovain (the Everfrost): A legendary white dragon carved from living frost. Having escaped the Cult’s grasp, it has returned to the peaks of the Sword Mountains, seeking to spread perpetual winter with the aid of unknown allies.
- Virethas (the Jade Queen / Villathas): An ancient green dragon slain in the past outside Neverwinter by Lady Tanager Alagondar. She was recently partially resurrected in Dragon Barrow as a weakened adult green dragon fused with the soul of Gilmore’s sister, Elire.
- The Magnificent Five (or Fantastic Five): A group of local heroes consisting of:
- Farwald: Revealed to be the long-lost giant-hero Hrothgar Hillsfar of Kuldahar, whose memories were restored at Helm’s Hold. He is a 3.2m tall Firbolg cleric of Torvik.
- Gilmore: A noble of House Stork from Pink Tor on the western edge of the Moonshae Isles. After his sister Elire was killed by dragon-mask wearing cultists, he sought her remains, undertook a trial in Silverymoon by immersing himself in a pool of blood, and became a paladin bound to the Matron of Ravens. He carries her soulstone (a purple gem on a golden chain) and wields Lady Alagondar’s Dragon Slayer sword alongside the Blade of Tristan.
- Nalini: A spore druid fairy with nature magic from the Arbor Land who scouted Wave Echo Cave as a spider and connected with the local Myconids. Her journey was motivated by checking on Druids of the Emerald Enclave, including Reidoth and Aadabra.
- Hope: A fierce warrior from Beggar’s Nest in the Neverwinter Slums. She overcame a cursed Berserker’s Axe with the help of Farwald and Dusty.
- Erevyn: A highly curious half-elf rogue linked to the Zhentarim who trained with Halia Thorton and went undercover to spy on the Spider. Born to a dockworker and an elven nurse in Neverwinter, he was recruited by Lucian Nightshade after sneaking into his Blacklake District cellar.
