The Neverwinter Sewers

The sewers of Neverwinter, while built to manage the waste of the Jewel of the North, serve a far more insidious purpose as a subterranean network for smuggling, espionage, and treason. Beneath the bustling surface of a city preparing for war, these dark, winding stone tunnels provide unchecked passage for thieves, pirates, and conspirators.

The Waterways and the Gentleman’s Agreement

For years, rogue factions and smuggler crews navigated the sewers through a quiet arrangement with Patricius, the city’s Head of Sewers and Waterways (also known as the city comptroller). Plagued by a severe gambling problem, Patricius paid off his debts to Anthony “the Gentleman” Calloway—the influential half-orc boss of the Cha-Ching casino in the Beggar’s Nest slums—by granting his crew unrestricted access to the subterranean tunnels.

To easily manage the city’s water flow and avoid paying manual laborers, Patricius acquired a magical ring from a wizard, using its power to regulate the waterways for free. However, when Patricius suddenly vanished alongside his magic ring, the sewer water levels became dangerously unstable, producing a loud, rushing sound upstream and leaving “something loose” within the dark system.

Recent Incursions and Sewer Skirmishes

During a tight military lockdown of Neverwinter, the sewers served as an essential backdoor for those trying to bypass surface patrols. The half-elf rogue Erevyn Sehahine and the fairy druid Nalini slipped into a sewer grate by luring a guard away using a Minor Illusion. Inside, they encountered tepid pools and knee-deep, rushing waters, having to push against a heavy inflow to escape through the Black Lake grate, which emptied directly into the Blacklake District.

Soon after, an adventuring party descended into the sewers, sneaking past guards stationed at the various entrances. They tracked down a crew of Luskan Pirates who had captured Patricius. The pirates were using Patricius’s stolen ring—identified as a pale, opal-blue Ring of Control Water Elementals—to enslave a water elemental, forcing it to manipulate the sewer’s water levels.

Though the party defeated the pirates and the water elemental, Patricius was killed in the crossfire. His death instantly broke the elemental’s influence. The heroes recovered Patricius’s body and a Luskan signaling lantern (confirming extensive Luskan infiltration), but they decided to keep the powerful ring for themselves, concealing it in a Bag of Holding rather than returning it to Anthony Calloway.

The party delivered Patricius’s corpse to the Cha-Ching Club, claiming the Luskanites had killed him and stolen the ring. Anthony Calloway accepted this deception, paying out half the original reward and sharing the name of Talis, who was currently held in Peninsula Prison.

Strategic Importance

The sewers connect key areas of the city, including the Arcanist District, the Blacklake District, Beggar’s Nest, and the Docks. This vast network allows illicit operations to bypass the heavily fortified Castle District and Market District. For rogue elements and organizations like the Zhentarim, the sewers and associated hidden passages remain invaluable assets for moving undetected through the Jewel of the North. Escaping the guarded cistern exits remains highly dangerous under tight guard patrols, sometimes requiring elaborate distractions to draw away the city’s elite Griffin Knights.
