Esfaloth Nightbreeze
Esfaloth Nightbreeze, widely known in modern times as Reidoth, is a reclusive, fey-touched, and exceptionally powerful druid associated with the untamed wilderness of the North. Over 500 years old, he is a pale-skinned elf with black hair and striking green eyes.
Overview
Reidoth is a member of the Emerald Enclave, a faction dedicated to maintaining the balance of nature. Following the devastating outbreak of the Wailing Death plague in Neverwinter, the Enclave lost touch with Reidoth and fellow member Aadbra Gwynn (a midwife, miller, and devout follower of Melora the Wildmother) in the Phandalin region. Nimiriel Nightbreeze, an Emerald Enclave ranger stationed at the druid grove in Neverwinter, later tasked the fairy adventurer Nalini with searching for them.
Reidoth makes his home somewhere within the vast, shadowed depths of the Neverwinter Wood. For several months, the druid remained entirely unseen by the local populace of Phandalin, leading many to wonder about his status and whereabouts. However, reports place Reidoth active along the Neverwinter River, where he has been actively harassing local logging operations in the Deadwood with a fierce desire to have nature reclaim what is hers. Recently, these disruptive actions escalated to the point where logging shipments needed to rebuild the plague-ravaged city of Neverwinter completely ceased.
Within Phandalin, opinions on the druid are highly divided. While some look to Reidoth as a potential ally against looming regional threats—such as the white dragon Cryovain—others, including Townmaster Harbin Wester, dismiss the druid as “crazy” and doubt he would offer any meaningful assistance to civilized folk. Nonetheless, those seeking to halt the unnatural cold creeping from the southern Sword Mountains believe Reidoth may hold the key to helping nature overcome this sudden, freezing blight.
The Tragedy of Silverwood
Esfaloth is the last of the Naila (“the secluded ones”), an ancient tribe of lore-keepers and nature-druids from the long-lost Silverwood. In his youth, Esfaloth was a peaceful guardian who tuned himself to the songs of the birds, the paths of the deer, and the branches of the trees. This peace was shattered when a human warlord, Count Richter, arrived with a wax-sealed paper “claim” to the land. When Esfaloth’s father protested, Richter murdered him on the spot. Richter’s forces—armed with axes and fire—razed the ancient forest, destroying the natural magic of the region as the trees burned.
While his sister, Nimiriel, led the remaining survivors and younglings to safety in Neverwinter—where they remain as refugees relegated to a “golden cage” of a city park—Esfaloth stayed behind. He waged a lonely, bitter guerrilla war against Richter’s settlers for years, eventually assassinating a councilman. To escape the encroaching reach of human expansion, Esfaloth retreated to the timeless twilight of the Feywild, where he spent many decades before returning to the Material Plane to find Neverwinter Wood suffering the same fate. These tragedies forged his absolute conviction that civilization is the greatest evil in the world, far worse than demons, devils, or dragons.
Historical Legacy
Three centuries ago, under the name Esfaloth Nightbreeze (also known as The Fey Touched or Esfaloth the Druid), he was recognized as a member of the legendary band of heroes who saved the Sword Coast from a destructive coalition of chromatic dragons. Alongside figures such as Elminster Aumar (the Sage of Shadowdale), Kiara Shadowbreaker, Gorion of Candlekeep, Uther Vendrock, Lady Tanager Alagondar of Neverwinter, and Hrothgar Hillsfar (the Firbolg cleric who later lived under the magically altered persona of Farwald), Esfaloth fought to save the realm.
To defeat the dragons, the heroes constructed five magical dragon masks—one of each chromatic color—to influence and control the great wyrms. Using these masks, the party convinced the Black, Red, and Blue dragons to fly away and never return. The White Dragon, Cryovain the Everfrost, was banished to the north and eventually sealed within Hrothgar’s empty grave. The green dragon, Virethas the Jade Queen, resisted the mask’s magic and had to be slain in a direct, bloody battle by Lady Tanager Alagondar, who tragically perished in the encounter.
Historical carvings inside the Dragon Barrow portray Esfaloth during this era as an elf holding a longbow with a bird perched on his shoulder. While companions like Lady Alagondar fell, a final carving depicts the heroes with their backs turned as the dragons fly away, with Esfaloth entering a portal to the Feywild. Recently, after Hrothgar’s true memories were restored, the ancient Firbolg dispatched magical warnings to Esfaloth, warning him that “the sleeper under the ice is waking.”
Confrontation and Nalini’s Sacrifice
Following their arrival in Phandalin, the adventuring party known as The Magnificent Five learned of Reidoth’s long absence. Nalini, a fairy member of the party, sought the druid to unlock the mysteries of the wilderness and fulfill Nimiriel’s request. However, when Nalini attempted to attune to the regional mycelium network, she felt a mournful, grieving dirge from the north, which flared into a red-hot anger that severed her connection.
This volatile anger culminated after the events at the Dragon Barrow, where the green dragon Villathas was partially resurrected. The trees of the Neverwinter Wood began to visibly shift, forming an impenetrable, defensive line to seal the forest away from a world it no longer trusted. When Hrothgar approached the treeline to speak, Reidoth projected his furious voice directly into Nalini’s mind, accusing the party of helping “that idiot child” wake the dragon and declaring that he had chosen to lock the woods away. He addressed Hrothgar with the words, “Son of Kuldahar, your heart has gone cold,” before vindictively tripping Nalini with a root.
Following a dream in which the warrior-druid Luvat advised Nalini to “follow her brother” (referring to Esfaloth), the party traveled directly into the heart of the Deadwood. Nalini reached out to the druid, presenting a radical alternative to his isolationism: coexistence. In a powerful show of faith, Nalini sacrificed her newly acquired, highly valuable Ring of Control Water Elementals, using its magic to divert waterways and spending eight hours casting spells to revitalize and regrow half a mile of the ruined forest.
Amazed by her selflessness and her connection to the mycelium network, Reidoth’s hostility softened. Recognizing her devotion to nature, he showed Nalini how to wild shape into flying creatures, and the two flew together over the newly regrown, verdant canopy of the Wood.
