Nocturne, The Dread Prince

Nocturne, known as the Dread Prince, is a powerful chromatic dragon who once brought devastation to the northern lands of the Sword Coast.

The Great Dragon War

Three hundred years ago, the major urban centers of the Sword Coast—including Luskan, Neverwinter, Waterdeep, and Baldur’s Gate—were in their infancy. During this era, a cohort of Chromatic Dragons united to launch a devastating offensive across the North, laying waste to much of the region.

In response to this overwhelming threat, the Lord’s Alliance was established, bringing together the forces of Silverymoon, Waterdeep, Neverwinter, and Baldur’s Gate. Luskan, however, chose to capitulate to the dragons, offering them tribute instead of joining the alliance. Supported by a legendary band of heroes—including Elminster Aumar, Lady Tanager Alagondar, Hrothgar Hillsfar, Esfaloth Nightbreeze, Gorion of Candlekeep, Kiara Shadowbreaker, and Uther Vendrock—the allied armies succeeded in driving back the draconic threat. They slew the Green Dragon Virethas, “The Jade Queen,” outside Neverwinter and scattered the remaining chromatic dragons to the far reaches of the world.

Exile of the Dragon Lords

Following their defeat, the remaining dragon lords were driven into permanent exile:

• Nocturne, the Dread Prince, was driven into exile.
• Cryovain, the Everfrost, fled north to the Throat of the World.
• Skaldreth, the Red Rage, retreated into exile.
• Barakis, the Sandstrom, escaped into exile.

Modern Schemes and the Cult of the Dragon

Though Nocturne has remained exiled for three centuries, his peace may be short-lived. Tiamat, the Scaled Tyrant, has been actively nurturing the Cult of the Dragon to seek out the surviving chromatic dragon lords. The Cult plans to locate these remaining dragons, raise the deceased Virethas as a Dracolich, and crown them once again as the absolute rulers of the North.
