The Boots of the Winterlands are a powerful pair of magical footwear designed to protect their wearer from the deadliest winter climates. In the frozen, wind-blasted wastes of the Far North—specifically the perilous passes of the Throat of the World Mountains—these boots serve as an invaluable bulwark against hypothermia, frostbite, and the exhausting toll of sub-zero travel.

Attunement and Strategic Choices

During the voyage north aboard the Providence Queen, as the adventuring party closed in on the northern shoreline west of Luskan, the paladin Gilmore Stork of the Moonshae Isles made the calculated decision to adjust his magical attunements. To prepare for the brutal land crossing ahead, Gilmore chose to unattune his legendary Blade of Tristan—willingly forfeiting its magical +1 enchantment and its throwing-return property.

In its place, he attuned the Boots of the Winterlands. After weighing his options, Gilmore opted to keep his Plate of the Pact attuned alongside the boots, specifically anticipating that the plate’s fire-based reaction would prove highly effective against any ice-dwelling monstrosities they might encounter in the frozen peaks.

The Crossing of the Throat of the World

The true value of the boots was demonstrated immediately upon landfall. As the party climbed the sheer, unforgiving trails of the Throat of the World Mountains, they were subjected to biting winds and plunging temperatures that demanded grueling Constitution saving throws.

While his companion Erevyn, dressed only in standard city clothes, quickly succumbed to the elements and suffered a level of exhaustion, Gilmore remained completely unaffected. Thanks to the magic of the Boots of the Winterlands, Gilmore was entirely untouched by the biting cold, allowing him to maintain his footing and strength. This protection kept him standing when the group was subsequently struck by a raging blizzard and a sudden, devastating avalanche that buried the entire party under six feet of heavy powder.
