Count Gelden Allfield
Count Gelden Allfield (also spelled Count Geldon Allfield) is the Treasurer of Neverwinter and a prominent member of the Small Council that advises Lord Nasher Alagondar from Castle Never.
Bureaucracy and Financial Distress
Count Allfield is widely recognized for his persistent complaints regarding the city’s severe lack of available funds. His fiscal anxieties are directly tied to the compounding crises facing Neverwinter:
- Post-Plague Reconstruction: The city is actively recovering from the aftermath of the “Wailing Death,” a catastrophic magical plague that decimated the population.
- Military Escalation: Heavy wartime preparations against Luskan have strained Neverwinter’s resources. Supplies and massive amounts of lumber are being diverted to the docks, causing food and lumber prices to skyrocket across the districts.
- Severe Shortages: The economic strain has led to severe food shortages, leaving civic and religious organizations, such as the druids of the Emerald Grove, struggling to feed and shelter starving children affected by the crisis.
The Small Council of Neverwinter and Spy Suspicions
Allfield operates within a tense political environment alongside Lord Nasher’s other key advisors:
- Lady Aribeth De Tylmarande: Captain of the Guard and Lord Nasher’s trusted Right Hand.
- Lucien Nightshade: The Spymaster, who covertly operates as the chapter leader of the Zhentarim in Neverwinter. Lucien has personally vetted Allfield, referring to him as a meticulous “bean counter” and confirming there is “no missing money on the books.” This flawless auditing, however, paradoxically deepens the Spymaster’s paranoia regarding intelligence leaks, as everything on paper remains inexplicably clean.
- Archmage Vael Tarmyth: The city’s high-level magic advisor, who rarely attends council meetings.
- Aldis Trueshot: Captain and Master at Arms for Neverwinter.
- Finster Lionheart: Admiral and Shipmaster.
Despite the ongoing war preparations and the heavy toll on Neverwinter’s citizenry, Allfield’s strict bookkeeping has kept the city’s internal treasury accounts clear of any obvious discrepancy, even as the broader economy borders on collapse.
