Moradin, The All-Hammer
Moradin, also known as the All-Hammer, is a Prime Deity whose historical influence is deeply woven into the subterranean caverns of the Sword Coast, particularly within the sacred spaces and culture of the dwarves. Worshipped openly as a beneficial, good-aligned deity, his divine domains encompass craft, creation, family, and legacy.
Mythological Origins and the Divine Gate
According to ancient creation myths from the Age of Arcanum, Moradin was among the group of formless gods who arrived at a world churning in primordial chaos. Seeing boundless potential, these deities tamed the disorder and crafted the mortal races to inhabit it. The dwarves were the second of these creations, shaped after the elves but before the humans. To help their children withstand the harsh world, the gods bestowed upon them slivers of their own essence, sparking the birth of magic.
As mortal progress gave way to unchecked arrogance, a devastating magical arms race culminated in the catastrophic war known as The Calamity. During this conflict, a great schism split the divine pantheon. Moradin and his fellow Prime Deities fought to defend their creations from the Betrayer Gods, who sought to enslave or destroy humanity and its peers. To protect the mortal realm from the ruin of unchecked divinity, the Prime Deities ultimately erected the Divine Gate—a barrier sealing themselves away from the Material Plane forever.
In the ancient night sky of the Age of Arcanum—over a thousand years ago—a distinct constellation mapped Moradin’s divine presence. This zodiac featured a large, majestic hammer that appeared bedecked in glittering jewels across its handle and head. This very constellation briefly realigned on the ceiling of the Forge of Spells when its ancient beacons were activated, shining alongside a delicate hand and a great castle to project the long-lost sky of the Era of Divergence.
Divination and the Tarot
In the mystical fortune-telling traditions of the Sword Coast, Moradin is represented by The Hierophant card. Associated with the fortunes of family, craft, and legacy, his custom card depicts a sacred hammer resting upon a pedestal beneath a grand, protective arch.
The Defiled Altar of Wave Echo Cave
In the ancient past, a grand altar to Moradin was established in the main hall of Wave Echo Cave, a legendary site tied to the Pact of Phandelver. During recent excavations, this sacred dwarven monument was desecrated by Nezznar the Spider, a malicious Drider leading a subterranean operation. Nezznar corrupted the altar, transforming it into a site dedicated to Lloth, the Spider Queen. Before this defiled monument, the Spider offered frequent prayers and blood sacrifices—including sacrificing a human collaborator wearing a red cloak—to implore Lloth for vengeance against his enemies.
During a final confrontation, the adventuring party known as the Magnificent Five ambushed the Spider. During the fierce battle, the druid Nalini summoned a ball of flame that incinerated the corrupted webs and spider eggs covering the monument. As the filth burned away, it cleaned the ancient monument to reveal the original, stone-carved face of a stern-looking dwarf with only one arm, restoring the true likeness of the All-Hammer to his ancestral sanctuary.
