The Harthwyld
Harthwylds are rare, formidable chimeric beasts native to the Glimmering Deep—a fog-shrouded, magical forest on the northern half of Stork’s Rest, a wind-torn island located on the rugged western edge of the Moonshae Isles. They are deeply bound to the forest’s magic, serving as protectors of its boundaries and secrets.
Physiology and Appearance
A Harthwyld is described as a monstrous hybrid, half-bear and half-stag. Its most striking physical feature is its massive set of sweeping, bone-white antlers, which it uses alongside its predatory raw strength to defend its territory.
Guardians of the Boundary
The Glimmering Deep is an ancient wood that actively bends the minds of those who enter, causing travelers to lose their memories, identities, and sense of time. The Harthwylds act as physical guardians of these woods, keeping intruders out and ensuring the secrets of the forest—such as rumored portals to older druidic realms—remain undisturbed.
The Stork Family Grudge
The exiled noble family of House Stork shares a tragic and bitter history with the Harthwylds:
- The Slaying: Generations after the Storks were banished to Stork’s Rest, the grandfather of Gilmore Stork was brutally mauled by a Harthwyld near the forest’s edge. Though mortally wounded, he succeeded in killing the beast and dragging its severed head back to his village as a trophy. He perished from his injuries that very night.
- The Trophy and Curse: The grotesque, antlered head of the slain Harthwyld still hangs above the hearth in the Storks’ pink tower in the village of Pink Tor. Believing that the forest and its remaining guardians hold an active, supernatural grudge against their bloodline, the Stork family has avoided entering the Glimmering Deep ever since.
