The Docks

The Docks, also known as the Docks District, is the sprawling, chaotic waterfront of the City of Neverwinter. Situated outside the safety of the city walls, this bustling sector serves as the absolute lifeblood of Neverwinter’s trade, mercantile exchange, and shipbuilding industries. It is home to an array of seafaring folk, merchants, transient sailors, and hard-working laborers.

Geography and Atmosphere

While the inner districts of Neverwinter—such as the noble Blacklake District or the commercial Market District—operate within protected stone walls, the Docks District is exposed directly to the sea and the geothermal river waters that keep the harbor free of ice year-round.

History and Key Connections

The Docks have played a central role in the lives of several prominent figures and recent historic events:

The Youth of Erëvyn Sehahine

The Zhentarim spy and adventurer Erëvyn Sehahine (born Erëvan Sehahine) was raised in the heart of the Docks District, the son of a local human dockworker and an elven nurse. Erëvyn spent his formative years navigating the labyrinthine docks, exploring incoming vessels, and listening to the fantastical stories of foreign sailors in the district’s rough-and-tumble taverns.

His career as a rogue began on a midnight dare when he climbed one of the massive dock cranes. From its lofty, silent height, he found a profound appreciation for secret places, subsequently dedicating his youth to sneaking into dock warehouses to inspect cargo, tracking where dock cats hunted, and listening to tavern gossip under the cover of darkness. It was during these nocturnal excursions that Erëvyn began noticing mysterious symbols carved into crates and scrawled on dock walls—specifically the symbol of a dragon swallowing a moon, which he would later learn represented the Zhentarim.

Erëvyn’s sister, Ophelia, still resides in a modest home within the Docks District alongside her roommate, Yeva.

Wartime Preparations and the Luskan Threat

In the wake of the devastating Wailing Death plague and a looming military conflict with Luskan (the “City of Sails”), the Docks District became a frenzied hub of military mobilization. Under the direction of Lord Nasher Alagondar and his Small Council, ships flooded the harbor to unload immense quantities of lumber and supplies to fortify Neverwinter’s defenses.

During this period of heavy mobilization, food and supply prices skyrocketed, deeply affecting the working-class families of the waterfront, including Ophelia and Yeva.
