The Great Oyster Dive
The Great Oyster Dive is a boisterous annual festival celebrated during the summer solstice on the rugged, wind-torn island of Stork’s Rest, located on the western edge of the Moonshae Isles.
The Festival and the Hunt
During the solstice, the young men of the island’s three villages—Pink Tor, Wraithcliff, and Dunfold—plunge into the offshore kelp forests to dive for oysters. These oysters are highly unusual due to the magical influence of the island. They absorb the strange, reality-warping energy emanating from the Glimmering Deep, a dense, foggy forest covering the northern half of Stork’s Rest.
The Magic of the Pearls
The harvested oysters occasionally contain rare, magical pearls that hum, glow, or bestow whimsical blessings. Unrefined, these pearls can cause minor mischief, but they are highly prized in distant cities like Waterdeep, where they are purchased as a source of deeper magic.
The victor of the Great Oyster Dive is awarded a ring set with one of these magical pearls. The prize bestows a variety of curious traits upon the champion:
- Improbable luck
- Odd coincidences
- Sea-colored dreams
- Fortunate “accidents” that ultimately turn out in the wearer’s favor
Historical Impact and Gilmore Stork
Though the local nobility, the exiled House of Stork, looked down upon the festival as a mere peasant pastime, their second son, Gilmore Stork, possessed an annoying talent for it. To his family’s deep horror, Gilmore won the Great Oyster Dive three consecutive years, beating out seasoned local fishermen and farm boys, further fueling the frustration of his traditionalist father, Thalorian Stork.
