Torvik
Torvik is the name used by the Firbolg clans of Kuldahar in Icewind Dale for Ulutiu, the sleeping father of the giant kin. He is revered as a god of ice, wind, and divine rebellion, historically known as the first challenger of the ordin (the ordning that defines giant races) and the All-Father, Annam.
Mythology and the Kuldahar Pantheon
Within the Firbolg settlement of Kuldahar—renowned for its enormous world tree created by Diancastra—the spiritual leaders preach a delicate balance among three primary deities:
- Othea: The mother goddess, who governs nature, community, and the home.
- Diancastra: The goddess of trickery, who allowed the Firbolgs to exist outside the constraints of the giant ordin.
- Torvik (Ulutiu): The sleeping father of giant kin, associated with the bitter wind and ice.
Because Torvik is currently asleep, spiritual skalds and clerics traditionally derive their magical powers from Othea and Diancastra. As a result, the community of Kuldahar historically prioritized diplomacy, trickery, planning, and natural harmony in their daily lives.
The Slumbering Connection
Though Torvik’s slumber typically keeps him from actively fueling the spells of his priesthood, his domain can still manifest under extraordinary circumstances. Following the powerful memory alteration of the legendary Firbolg skald Hrothgar (who lived for centuries under the human guise of Farwald), his clerical powers underwent a drastic transformation.
Rather than drawing from the goddesses of peace, nature, or trickery, Hrothgar’s restored magic aligned directly with the domain of Torvik. Because the god remains asleep, this connection represents a fractured, chaotic source of power—earning him the reputation of an “Anarchy god” of ice and wind.
