The Emerald Enclave

The Emerald Enclave is an organization of druids, rangers, and wilderness guardians dedicated to preserving the natural order and maintaining the delicate balance between civilization and the untamed wilds of the Sword Coast.

The Neverwinter Sanctuary (The Emerald Grove)

In the bustling, plague-scarred city of Neverwinter, the Enclave maintains a peaceful sanctuary in the Temple District known as the druid grove or the Emerald Grove. This quiet haven is centered around a massive, beautiful Oak tree, serving as a bastion of nature amidst the cobblestones and markets. The grove is tended by dedicated caretakers, including Nimiriel Nightbreeze, an Enclave ranger who welcomes weary travelers, nature spirits, and woodland allies.

Nimiriel is the sister of the ancient elf druid Esfaloth Nightbreeze. Following the destruction of their ancestral home of Silverwood, Nimiriel led the surviving younglings and refugees of their tribe, the Naila, to Neverwinter. There, they live as refugees within the city’s park—a sanctuary Esfaloth bitterly views as a “golden cage” or “stone cage.”

Response to the Wailing Death

When a devastating magical plague known as the Wailing Death afflicted the populace of Neverwinter, the Druids of the Emerald Enclave put out a desperate call for assistance, appealing to the spirits, healers, and fae of the surrounding regions—including the magical fairy glade of Arbor in the northern Neverwinter Wood. Among those who answered was Nalini, a young fairy who traveled to Neverwinter to offer her aid. Through their combined efforts, they established the grove as a crucial center of healing and relief. Following the passing of the plague, the Enclave redirected its focus toward restoring the wilderness surrounding the city and investigating other ecological disruptions.

Post-Plague Relief Efforts

In the wake of the plague, as Neverwinter faced severe food shortages and skyrocketing prices amidst brewing wartime preparations against Luskan, the Emerald Grove became a critical refuge. Ranger Nimiriel Nightbreeze found herself overwhelmed, using the Grove’s magic to shelter and feed dozens of starving children. Allies of the Enclave, including Nalini and the disguised Firbolg cleric Farwald (Hrothgar), assisted by utilizing their magic to heal the sick children and grow fresh crops within the sanctuary’s soil.

Southern Expeditions and Secret Identities

Following the recovery of Neverwinter, the Enclave turned its attention southward toward the frontier town of Phandalin, prompted by rumors of an unnaturally cold autumn gripping the valley. Due to the chaos of the plague, the Enclave lost touch with two key members operating in the region:

The Tragedy of Esfaloth and the Sealing of the Wood

Recent revelations have uncovered that Reidoth is actually Esfaloth Nightbreeze, also known as “The Fey Touched.” An ancient elf over 500 years old, Esfaloth is a legendary dragonslayer who fought alongside Hrothgar (Farwald) and Elminster in the chromatic dragon wars three centuries ago. He is the last of the Naila (“the secluded ones”), a tribe of lore-keepers from the ancient Silverwood.

Silverwood was razed with fire and axes by a human warlord, Count Richter, who slaughtered Esfaloth’s father and destroyed the tribe’s magic. This trauma fueled Esfaloth’s deep conviction that human civilization is the ultimate evil, far more destructive than demons, devils, or dragons. After spending lost years wandering the timeless twilight of the Feywild, Esfaloth returned to the Material Plane to wage a lonely guerrilla war against logging interests.

Following the premature resurrection of the green dragon Villathas (Virethas) at Dragon Barrow, Esfaloth grew furious with the material world’s reckless actions. Declaring that he would no longer defend the forest alone, he commanded the trees of the Neverwinter Wood to draw inward, forming an impenetrable, defensive line of thorned wood that completely seals the forest away from a world it no longer trusts. Though Nalini sacrificed a powerful Ring of Control Water Elementals and used her spore magic to enrich the soil and accelerate the forest’s regrowth, Esfaloth remains distrustful of the outside world, keeping the wood closed to civilization.
