The Signaling Lantern
The Signaling Lantern (also referred to as the Luskan signaling lantern or pirate signaling lantern) is a piece of smuggling and communication gear used by the Luskan Pirates within the dark, flooded sewers of Neverwinter. It was primarily employed to coordinate illicit operations and signal smuggling vessels.
Discovery in the Sewers
During a time of escalating tensions and the formal declaration of war between Neverwinter and Luskan, the party descended into the city’s subterranean waterways. This expedition was initiated under the guidance of Anthony Calloway (famously known as “the Gentleman”), a prominent underworld figure operating the Cha-Ching casino in the slums of Beggar’s Nest. The city’s Head of Sewers and Waterways and City Comptroller, Patricius, had mysteriously vanished due to a gambling problem, causing the sewer water levels to become dangerously unstable.
Deep within the humid, knee-deep waters of the sewer system, the adventurers tracked down a cell of Luskan Pirates. The pirates had captured Patricius and were using a specialized magic ring—identified as a pale, opal-blue band known as the Ring of Control Water Elementals—to enslave a water elemental and manipulate the city’s water flow. Although Patricius was tragically killed during the confrontation, the party successfully defeated the pirates. From the scene, they recovered 170 gold, the elemental-controlling ring, and the Signaling Lantern used to communicate.
