Nimiriel Nightbreeze

Nimiriel Nightbreeze is a dedicated ranger and druid of the Emerald Enclave, serving as one of the primary caretakers of the quiet druid grove—known as the Emerald Grove—located in the Temple District of Neverwinter. She plays a critical role in guiding travelers, maintaining the natural balance of the Sword Coast frontier, and sheltering those in need.

Nimiriel is a survivor of the Naila tribe and the sister of Esfaloth Nightbreeze, also known as “The Fey Touched” or “Reidoth,” a legendary hero who fought alongside the Lord’s Alliance to defeat the chromatic dragons three centuries ago.

The Fall of Silverwood and Exile

Nimiriel and her brother Esfaloth are the last of the Naila (“the secluded ones”), an ancient tribe of lore-keepers and nature-druids from the ancient, primordial forest of Silverwood. Centuries ago, a human warlord named Count Richter arrived with a paper “claim” to their ancestral lands. When their father protested, the Count murdered him, and his forces razed the forest with axes and fire.

As the Silverwood burned and their localized nature magic waned, Nimiriel made the painful decision to lead the younglings and remaining survivors to safety rather than wage a hopeless, endless war. She guided them to the city of Neverwinter, where they have lived ever since as permanent refugees. The Emerald Grove, a quiet sanctuary in the middle of the city’s stone streets, serves as a paltry shadow—what her brother bitterly calls a “stone cage”—of the ancestral forest they lost.

Aftermath of the Wailing Death

Following the containment of the Wailing Death—a devastating magical plague that afflicted the Jewel of the North—Nimiriel remained in Neverwinter to tend to the massive oak tree at the center of the city’s druid grove. It was here that she encountered Nalini, a young fairy from the magical glade of Arbor in the northern reaches of Neverwinter Wood, who had traveled to the city to offer her aid as a healer.

Sensing Nalini’s profound discomfort with the crowded, noisy streets of the city and the squalor of the Beggar’s Nest slums, Nimiriel welcomed her warmly. Knowing that the grove no longer required the fairy’s assistance now that the plague had passed, Nimiriel sought to redirect Nalini’s talents where they were needed most.

The Mission to Phandalin

Nimiriel encouraged Nalini to seek adventure by traveling south toward the frontier town of Phandalin. The Emerald Enclave had recently received worrying rumors of a much colder than expected autumn gripping the Phandalin Valley.

Additionally, Nimiriel was deeply concerned about two fellow Enclave members who had ceased all communications during the height of the Wailing Death plague. She tasked Nalini with checking on their welfare:

• Reidoth: A reclusive druid rumored to be residing in the Neverwinter Wood, recently reported to be harassing local logging camps to allow nature to reclaim its own. Unbeknownst to Nalini at the time, “Reidoth” was actually Nimiriel’s long-lost brother, Esfaloth Nightbreeze, waging a lonely guerrilla war against civilization.
• Aadbra Gwynn: A cleric of the Wildmother who served as the local miller and midwife of Phandalin.

Nimiriel’s timely guidance ultimately led Nalini to connect with the dwarf Gundren Rockseeker, sparking the adventure that would bring together the legendary party known as the Magnificent Five.

The Wartime Crisis in Neverwinter

Months later, as the threat of war with Luskan loomed over the region, Neverwinter fell into a state of heavy wartime preparations. With food and lumber prices skyrocketing, severe food shortages struck the city, leaving many of its most vulnerable citizens starving.

When Nalini and her companion Farwald returned to the Emerald Grove, they found Nimiriel completely overwhelmed, tirelessly exhausting the Grove’s natural magic to feed and shelter dozens of starving children affected by the city’s crisis. Nalini and Farwald immediately stepped in to assist Nimiriel, using their own spells to heal the sick children and grow fresh food. Shortly after, the rogue Er%vyn rejoined the group in the grove, just as a weary Nimiriel approached the trio.

During these desperate times, the party also brought new allies to the grove, including the warrior-druid Luvat, who recognized Nimiriel instantly, greeting her with: “We meet again for the first time.” In an effort to address the sickness spreading through the Neverwinter Wood, Nalini later pitched a plan to Esfaloth to use spores to regrow the forest faster and bring in Nimiriel to rally Neverwinter’s local druids, utilizing the magical reputation she built while aiding the city’s citizens.
