Lucian Nightshade
Lucian Nightshade (also known as Lucien Nightshade) is a highly prominent, politically savvy, and powerful agent operating within the northern frontier of the Sword Coast. Currently in his fifties, with salt-and-pepper hair and a drawn appearance, he resides in the opulent Nightshade Manor in Neverwinter’s affluent Blacklake District. Outwardly, he acts as an unofficial advisor and Spymaster on the Small Council of Neverwinter, working closely with Lady Aribeth de Tylmarande to advise Lord Nasher Alagondar from Castle Never. In the shadows, Nightshade serves as the undisputed secret chapter leader of the Zhentarim (the Black Network)—an ancient guild of spies, thieves, and smugglers—governing its local interests and leading a reformist faction to transform the Black Network into a respected league of diplomats, merchants, and spies who embed themselves in local networks to gather intelligence, traffic illicit goods, and manipulate local power dynamics.
The Small Council of Neverwinter & Internal Subversion
As Spymaster, Lucian maintains a tight grip on Neverwinter’s intelligence-gathering networks, navigating the city’s slow recovery from the devastating Wailing Death plague and looming wartime preparations against Luskan. However, he strongly suspects a mole on the council due to systemic intelligence failures, such as the Dragon Cult’s undetected rise and Luskan landing forces behind Neverwinter’s lines. The advisory body consists of:
- Lady Aribeth de Tylmarande – Captain of the Guard, paladin of Tyr, and Lord Nasher’s trusted “Right Hand.”
- Count Gelden Allfield – The city’s perpetually complaining Treasurer.
- Aldis Trueshot – Captain of the Armies and Master at Arms.
- Finster Lionheart – Admiral and Shipmaster.
- Archmage Vael Tarmyth – High-level magic advisor who rarely attends council meetings in person, usually sending a proxy.
Recruitment and Mentorship of Erevyn Sehahine
During the height of the Wailing Death plague, Lucian crossed paths with a young half-elf named Erevyn Sehahine (also known as Erëvyn or Ervan). Driven by desperation, Ervan had taken to lifting food and supplies from the noble estates of the Blacklake District. While infiltrating Lucian’s cellar, the youth discovered a letter from Waterdeep signed “J.G.” (Jamra Gleamsilver) marked with the Zhentarim’s dragon-and-moon crest. The letter detailed the transport of four magical creatures meant to cure the plague.
Lucian caught the young intruder perched in his cellar’s rafters. Recognizing the youth’s raw potential, Lucian took him under his wing rather than turning him over to the guard. For over a year, Lucian mentored Erevyn in the arts of espionage—teaching him to read ledgers, re-seal letters, discern hidden motives, and gather secrets. Lucian instilled in his apprentice the core philosophy that while gold and jewels hold value, “knowledge is the true power in the realm.”
Under Lucian’s guidance, Erevyn learned that Lucian and a faction of reformist allies are actively trying to rehabilitate the Black Network’s sordid reputation. After Erevyn overheard Sildar Hallwinter and Gundren Rockseeker planning an expedition, Lucian dispatched his pupil on his first official mission: to infiltrate the expedition and report on the discoveries in Phandalin.
The Spy Web of Phandalin & Network Friction
As a high-ranking regional director of the Zhentarim, Lucian Nightshade operates on equal footing with other notorious chapter leaders across Faerûn. This network is deeply divided by ideological friction, which often erupts into shadow conflicts.
Though Lucian’s personal movements remain largely behind the scenes, his close associates became deeply entangled in a dangerous espionage campaign in Phandalin against the mysterious figure known as The Spider (Nezznar, a Drider seeking the legendary Spell Forge of Wave Echo Cave). Erevyn trained with Halia Thorton, the Spymistress of Phandalin, for weeks in an attempt to spy on the Spider himself. However, during the operation, Erevyn was forced to kill Halia, though he ultimately managed to ingratiate himself with the Spider at a terrible cost. Following Halia’s death, Erevyn recovered a magically sealed message inside a dragon-and-moon amulet, which confirmed Lucian’s status as the undisputed head of the Neverwinter chapter.
The regional network remains divided by various actors:
- Jamra Gleamsilver (Jamrash) – Chapter leader in Waterdeep, who coordinated with Lucian during the plague. Though she claims “all is well,” Lucian notes she has not been in actual contact with their Waterdeep assets for months.
- Nezznar the Spider – Overseer of Underdark operations who harbored a deep disdain for Nightshade, Gleamsilver, and Halia Thorton. Nezznar bypassed local leadership to form a rogue, unauthorized alliance with the Cult of the Dragon to claim the Forge of Spells before being killed in Wave Echo Cave.
- The Pereghost – Commander of Zhentarim forces in the Moonshae Isles, currently reported missing and unreachable.
Recent Developments
Following the formal declaration of war between Neverwinter and Luskan, Erevyn and his companion Nalini sneaked through the locked-down Blacklake District sewers to meet Lucian at Nightshade Manor. Despite his tired and drawn demeanor, Lucian received them warmly over blueberry muffins and banana cake. He absolved Erevyn of Halia’s death, advising him: “You survived, my boy. That’s all any of us can do. We carry the burden of knowledge.”
Regarding the threat of chromatic dragons, Lucian advised that dragons fly roughly twice as fast as mortals and recommended either matching their speed or keeping them grounded. He directed them to contact Anthony “the Gentleman” of Beggar’s Nest for further intelligence, warning them to trust him “exactly as far as you can throw him” and never to call him “Tony Halftooth” to his face.
Before sending them on their way, Lucian opened a hidden cache behind a bookshelf by turning a small statue, gifting Nalini a pair of Bracers of Barkskin (raising her AC to 16). He also quietly let Erevyn pocket a smoke bomb, noting playfully, “be careful, those tend to go off at the worst time.”
