Beggar’s Nest

Beggar’s Nest (also known as the Neverwinter Slums, the Beggar Nest slums, or simply the Nest) is a notorious, impoverished slum district located south of the river in the city of Neverwinter (the Jewel of the North), nestled along the rugged Sword Coast. It acts as the primary gateway and first stop for merchant caravans entering the city from the south. While the cleaner districts like the City Core or the noble Blacklake District thrive, Beggar’s Nest represents a dark, desperate underbelly where survival is a daily battle and outlaws find easy harbor.

Society and Atmosphere

The district is incredibly dense, characterized by shacks built upon shacks and narrow, cramped alleyways that serve simultaneously as bathrooms, laundries, and social clubs. Visitors, like the fairy Nalini, are often overwhelmed by the sheer squalor, noise, and filth. The lower classes scrape by under the constant threat of the local underworld, which operates with brazen impunity. Even town guards and local judges can be seen gambling alongside criminals in broad daylight within the district’s establishments.

Life in Beggar’s Nest grew even more desperate in the wake of the Wailing Death, a devastating magical plague that decimated huge swathes of Neverwinter’s population. While the wealthy elite retreated behind their walls, the residents of the Nest were left largely to their own devices. Though the plague’s active spread has subsided, municipal rebuilding efforts have neglected Beggar’s Nest, leaving the district largely abandoned as the city struggles to project its taming influence into the surrounding wild frontiers.

Lore and Oral Traditions

Despite its bleak reality, Beggar’s Nest is a repository of oral history and ancient myths. Within its dark alleys, old drunks and various traveling bards keep alive stories of bygone eras. Desperate residents trade legends of the ancient Age of Arcanum—an epoch of boundless potential and magic—and the catastrophic global war known as The Calamity that followed, which left the world scarred and sealed the gods behind the Divine Gate.
