Blarg

Blarg is a bugbear chieftain who holds command over the goblinoid forces occupying Cragmaw Castle—the ruined remains of Highthorn, the ancient summer seat of the human King of the Pact of Phandelver, situated in the northern wilds of the Sword Coast.

Sovereignty Over Ruin

Though Blarg styled himself with the grand title of the King of Cragmaw, he was viewed with contempt by his associate, the drow wizard Nezznar (The Spider). In his private journals, Nezznar dismissed Blarg and his counterpart Klarg as “idiots,” though he acknowledged their success in securing the map to Wave Echo Cave. The Spider allowed Blarg to occupy the ruins of Highthorn simply because he had no interest in the fortress himself, mockingly noting that Blarg was welcome to “reign over broken sticks and stones” while the Spider ruled from below.

The Capture of Gundren Rockseeker

Blarg played a brief but devastating role in the struggle for the legendary Wave Echo Cave. Under his command, the Cragmaw forces ambushed the dwarf patron Gundren Rockseeker and seized his highly coveted map, which revealed the long-lost path to the Spell Forge. The acquisition of this map allowed the Spider to locate Wave Echo Cave and initiate his excavation of its ancient depths.

Clarification of Gundren’s Fate

Initial accounts delivered by the captive gnome academic Dusty suggested that Gundren had been slain by Blarg at Cragmaw Castle, a claim seemingly propagated by the Spider. However, these reports of the dwarf’s death proved to be false. Gundren was actually kept bound and captive within the ruins of Cragmaw Castle. Following the collapse of the Spider’s operations, Sildar Hallwinter tracked the dwarf to the castle and successfully rescued him, finding him battered but alive.
