Nolzur’s Magnificent Pigments
Nolzur’s Magnificent Pigments (also known as Marvelous Pigments or simply Magnificent Pigments) are a rare and powerful magical artifact originating from the legendary Age of Arcanum. They were recovered by the adventuring group known as The Magnificent Five (also known as the Fantastic Five) from the ruins of the Spell Forge within Wave Echo Cave.
History and Recovery
The pigments had lain undisturbed inside the Spell Forge for centuries following the Calamity. They were ultimately recovered when the Magnificent Five defeated the Forge’s construct guardian—an enormous metal creation known as The Blacksmith (or the Guardian of the Forge). The construct was programmed as a defense system by Gond, who was not a deity but rather a legendary, highly talented dwarven craftsman and the blacksmith of the Spell Forge during the Age of Arcanum. The party successfully disabled the construct by strategically disrupting its power pylons.
Alongside Nolzur’s Magnificent Pigments, the party recovered several other powerful relics of the Age of Arcanum:
- The Plate of the Pact: A set of brass-and-gold plate armor adorned with beautiful silver scrolling and priceless, cut rubies.
- Cabal’s Ruin: A cloak of dark purple dyed leather and gold trim that shimmers with small sparks of blue energy across its shadowed lining, possessing the ability to absorb magic and release it at the wearer’s will.
- Circlet of Larrelion: An impossibly thin silver circlet that enhances any spellcaster’s magical abilities.
- A Deck of Many Things: A legendary deck containing cards made of ivory or vellum, capable of bringing blessings or ruin upon whoever draws from it.
Properties and Usage
These magical pigments possess the unique ability to bridge the gap between artistic depiction and physical reality, allowing a user to create real, three-dimensional objects or terrain features by painting them in two dimensions:
- Creation Process: The paint flows dynamically from the brush to form the desired object as the painter concentrates intensely on its mental image.
- Capability: The pigments can be used to manifest inanimate objects or terrain features. Notable examples include doors, pits, flowers, trees, cells, rooms, or weapons.
- Physical Transformation: Upon completion of the painting, the depicted subject instantly transforms into a real, nonmagical object. For example, painting a door on a solid wall creates a functional, physical door that can be opened to reveal whatever lies on the other side of the wall. Similarly, painting a pit on a flat floor manifests a real, physical drop.
Notable Applications
Reclaiming Hrothgar’s Heritage
Following the restoration of his true identity by the mind-mage Griselda and a Lesser Restoration performed by the halfling cleric Sandra at Helm’s Hold, the ancient Firbolg hero Farwald (formerly known as Hrothgar Hillsfar) utilized the pigments. He used them to paint his original Firbolg clothing, a custom breastplate, and his original giant greatsword back into physical reality, re-equipping himself for the impending war against the Cult of the Dragon.
Escape from the Dragon’s Maw
During a climactic confrontation deep beneath Dragon Barrow, the party found themselves trapped inside the moving skeletal body of the resurrected green dragon Villathas (fused with the soul of Elire and powered by the Green Dragon Mask). As the beast began to break free and take flight, Farwald used the Marvelous Pigments to paint a massive wound and hole directly into the dragon’s side. This effectively manifested a Passwall effect, punching a hole to the outside through which sunlight poured, allowing the party to scramble and jump to safety before the creature gained too much height.
Escape from the Neverwinter Cisterns
Following a tense encounter in the Neverwinter sewers where Patricius was killed and a Ring of Control Water Elementals was recovered, the party found themselves trapped with the cistern exits heavily guarded by city forces. While Gilmore created a loud diversion at the walls, Farwald utilized his magical paints to create an escape route directly through a slum courtyard in Beggar’s Nest. This painted pathway allowed the rest of the party to slip away undetected.
