Count Richter
Count Richter was a ruthless human warlord whose expansionist greed led to the destruction of the Silverwood and the near-extinction of the Naila tribe. Historically, his campaign of violence exemplifies the destructive friction between advancing human civilization and the ancient, natural magic of the Sword Coast.
The Invasion of Silverwood
Over five centuries ago, Count Richter marched on the Silverwood, a primordial forest inhabited by the Naila—a secluded tribe of lore-keepers and nature-druids. Clad in metal armor and leading a force of approximately one hundred men, Richter sought to claim the land under the authority of human law.
Upon encountering the tribe, Richter presented a scroll affixed with a human wax seal, declaring, “I own this land now.” When the father of the druid Esfaloth protested and tried to reason with him, Richter ruthlessly shoved his blade into the elder’s chest, sparking a brief, one-sided war of extermination.
The Deforestation and its Magical Toll
With only two dozen Naila defenders, the tribe stood little chance against Richter’s forces. The warlord’s men utilized axes and fire to systematically raze the forest. As the ancient trees fell, the local magic of the region rapidly waned, stripping the druids of their power and leaving the land a barren graveyard of stumps.
While Nimiriel led the surviving Naila refugees to Neverwinter, the druid Esfaloth remained behind. He waged a lonely guerrilla campaign for years, hunting down Count Richter’s men from the shadows in an effort to avenge his people and halt the spread of civilization.
