The Lord’s Alliance

The Lord’s Alliance is a prominent political and military coalition of civilized centers stretching across the Sword Coast. These metropolitan bastions stand as islands of law, stability, and security amidst a dangerous and untamed wilderness.

History: The Great Dragon War

The Alliance was forged three hundred years ago in a crucible of fire and blood. A powerful group of Chromatic Dragons launched a devastating assault on the nascent northern cities of Luskan, Neverwinter, Waterdeep, and Baldur’s Gate, laying waste to much of the North. In response to this catastrophic threat, the Lord’s Alliance was formed, uniting the forces of Waterdeep, Neverwinter, Silverymoon, Baldur’s Gate, and several smaller settlements. Luskan, however, refused to join the coalition, choosing instead to capitulate and pay tribute to the dragons.

The unified armies of the newly formed Alliance fought a desperate campaign and ultimately pushed the invaders back. Outside Neverwinter, they achieved a monumental victory by slaying the green dragon Virethas, the Jade Queen. The remaining dragons were driven back to the far corners of the world:

Today, remnants of the Cult of the Dragon seek to locate these surviving dragons, raise Virethas as a Dracolich, and crown them as the lords of the north.

The Legendary Heroes of the Alliance

The historic victory against the dragons was achieved in large part due to a legendary band of heroes, many of whom fought under the banner of the Alliance:

Influence and Perceived Weakness

While the Alliance represents safety for citizens of the Great Cities, its influence is often viewed with contempt by those dwelling in the harsh wilderness or the deep Underdark. Nezznar, a drow operative known as “The Spider,” observed in his journal that living within the soft embrace of the Alliance’s metropolitan centers weakens those who dwell there. He argued that this environment had softened prominent Zhentarim figures, including Lucian Nightshade of Neverwinter, Jamra Gleamsilver of Waterdeep, and the late Halia Thorton of Phandalin.

This division has sparked an internal schism within the Zhentarim. Traditional chapter leaders who operate within Alliance territory—such as Lucian Nightshade in Neverwinter, Jamra Gleamsilver in Waterdeep, and Halia Thorton in Phandalin—seek to run the network as elite spies, diplomats, and smugglers, aiming to rehabilitate their reputation. Conversely, more aggressive factions allied with the Cult of the Dragon, such as Nezznar the Spider, hold the Alliance in deep contempt and plot to overthrow its influence.

Key Strongholds of the Alliance

Neverwinter

Often called the Jewel of the North, Neverwinter stands as the primary bastion of civilized life in the northern reaches of the Sword Coast, situated just before the Spine of the World mountains. Warmed by geothermal springs, the city has faced immense struggles. It is ruled by Lord Nashar Alagondar and his small council. The city is still actively recovering from the “Wailing Death,” a devastating magical plague that decimated its population roughly a year ago.

Rebuilding efforts continue, but Neverwinter’s authorities find it incredibly difficult to project their “taming influence” onto the surrounding wild frontier. This lack of support is felt acutely by nearby settlements like Phandalin; during recent crises involving dragon sightings and bandit raids, local leaders despaired that the city was too weak to help, lamenting: “The city will not aid us. They can barely feed themselves.”

Waterdeep

Located further south, Waterdeep is the largest city on the Sword Coast and a major hub of commerce, culture, and political power. It serves as the primary residence of Elminster Aumar when he is not traveling across the realm. It is also a key center of operation for various factions, including Zhentarim operatives like Jamra Gleamsilver.

Agents, Allies, and Betrayals

The Alliance operates through dedicated agents and peacekeepers to secure the wild frontier, though maintaining their loyalty far from the Great Cities is a constant struggle:
