The Guardian of the Forge

Overview

The Guardian of the Forge (also known as The Blacksmith) is an ancient, colossal metallic construct created by Gond during the Age of Arcanum. Standing sentinel over the final chamber of the Spell Forge deep within Wave Echo Cave, it serves as the ultimate line of defense for the legendary secrets of the Pact of Phandelver. While some localized legends mistake his creator for merely a highly talented dwarven craftsman who worked the forge, the sentinel’s true origin lies in divine craftsmanship, built as a masterpiece of unmatched scale and power.

History and Purpose

As the devastation of the Calamity swept through the Sword Coast North, bringing ruin to the civilizations of the Age of Arcanum, the historic alliance known as the Pact of Phandelver was undone from within and without by invading Betrayer armies, including Orcish and undead forces. This historic pact was a great alliance of three peoples: the humans of Highthorn under King Phandelver II, the dwarves of Axeholm under Queen Kima, and the elves of the Hand of Sehahine under Archmage Larellion, alongside the ingenious gnomes of the Vale.

Anticipating his own demise and the collapse of the North at the hands of the encroaching armies of the Betrayer Gods, Gond sealed the Spell Forge and recorded a final message for posterity. He placed the defense of his ultimate creation into the hands of this sentinel—whom he referred to as The Blacksmith and hailed as his “finest creation.”

Gond programmed the construct to serve as a crucible of judgment, testing the mettle, courage, and heart of any who successfully breached the final seal of the forge. If the seekers are deemed worthy, they are granted access to the Pact’s final treasures and ancient knowledge; if they fail the trial, the guardian is commanded to eliminate them, “sending them to their makers.”

Activation of the Smelter

The final seal to the chamber is opened only after the activation of Gond’s Smelter, a complex process that requires combining the distinct hallmarks of the Pact’s three main races:

Upon successful activation, molten metal flows through intricate floor grooves to power the chamber’s magical beacons and anchors. Simultaneously, the chamber’s ceiling transforms into a celestial dome showcasing the night sky of the Age of Arcanum from 1,000 years ago—before the Divine Gate existed, when the goddess Selûne still walked the Earth. The stars realign into three constellations representing the Pact: a delicate hand, a great castle, and a jeweled hammer. Starlight from these constellations shoots downward into the floor’s beacons to initialize the final sequence.

Appearance and Systems

The Blacksmith is a towering humanoid entity of groaning, polished metal, standing far larger than even a typical giant. Animated by highly advanced, ancient arcanotech, the construct rises from its central dais, its physical form pushed and shaped out of molten metal by shafts of pure starlight gathered from the room’s anchors. It features two glimmering gemstone eyes that function as sensory scanners: one red and one green. The red eye is actively utilized to scan targets and detect intruders.

When the final seal of the Spell Forge is breached, a magical projection of Gond’s face appears to deliver his final message, and the guardian is programmed to boot up and initialize its systems. During its recent awakening, the construct suffered a system error due to the destruction of one of the chamber’s magical anchors. With only seven of the eight stellar beacons functioning, the guardian initialized at 78% power. Running on this reduced capacity and suffering a critical malfunction, the construct bypassed its testing protocols, initialized its defensive program, scanned the chamber with its crimson eye, and immediately proceeded to execute its defensive protocols to neutralize the detected survivors as hostiles.

Downfall and Recovered Treasures

The Guardian of the Forge was ultimately confronted and defeated by a band of heroes known as The Magnificent Five (also celebrated in song as the Fantastic Five). By working together to cleverly disrupt the magical power pylons in the chamber, the adventurers managed to bypass its formidable defenses and shut down the construct.

Upon its defeat, several powerful artifacts from the Age of Arcanum were recovered from the chamber:
