Wraithcliff

Wraithcliff is a hardy farming village and port located on the island of Stork’s Rest, which sits on the rugged western edge of the Moonshae Isles. Situated on the island’s gentler bays, Wraithcliff serves as a crucial maritime link, with its small port connecting the western chain’s barley-producing islands.

Geography and Economy

As one of the three settled communities of Stork’s Rest, Wraithcliff occupies a distinct, relatively protected ecological niche on the island. While much of the island is characterized by wind-torn bluffs, storm beaches, and the treacherous, memory-stealing forest known as the Glimmering Deep to the north, Wraithcliff benefits from the shelter of the gentler bays.

The village’s primary economic activity revolves around farming and regional trade. Its port facilities, though modest compared to mainland ports, are robust enough to manage the import and export of barley across the western island chain. This active status stands in contrast to other key locations on the island:

• Pink Tor: The main southern settlement, featuring a pink-granite bluff, the ferry landing, the Stork library, the island’s only tavern, and the pink tower where the ruling family resides.
• Dunfold: The humblest of the three communities, populated primarily by goat herders and potato farmers.
• Greyhaven: An abandoned northern port that once met the sea but has since been swallowed by forest-magic and fog, leaving a rotting skeleton of broken piers.

Sociopolitical Landscape and the House of Stork

Like all settlements on Stork’s Rest, Wraithcliff falls under the influence of the exiled noble House of Stork (currently led by Thalorian Stork and Selene Valcorn). Banishment to this salt-scoured rock was decreed generations ago by the High King of the Moonshaes after Gilmore Stork’s great-grandfather defied royal marriage alliances. Because the Storks were descended from the legendary dragonslayer hero Lady Tanager Alagondar, their lives were spared, but the entire house was exiled to the far western isles to be kept occupied by storms, raiders, and the Glimmering Deep.

The inhabitants of Wraithcliff live under the shadow of the Stork family’s bitterness and their strict, inherited codes. Every child of the island is raised with the ancient Oath of the Crown:

Despite the isolation, the local pirate clans maintain a level of respect for the Storks due to historic marriage alliances, resulting in lighter raids on Wraithcliff and the surrounding coastal lands than anywhere else in the outer isles.

Culture and Traditions

The residents of Wraithcliff participate in the island’s annual Great Oyster Dive, held during the summer solstice. During this boisterous festival, young men dive into the offshore kelp forests for magical oysters that absorb the strange energies of the Glimmering Deep. These oysters produce pearls that glow, hum, or grant whimsical blessings, which are highly valued in cities like Waterdeep.
