The Tomb of Hrothgar

The Tomb of Hrothgar is a historical monument and resting place located in the frozen northern reaches of Icewind Dale, situated along the frigid shores of Lac Dinnershear, a frozen lake near the Firbolg settlement of Kuldahar. Though built to honor the legendary Firbolg hero Hrothgar Hillsfar, the tomb is historically noted as being empty, as Hrothgar did not perish but instead chose to magically alter his memory and form, living for centuries under the persona of “Farwald.”

The Secret of the White Mask

Following the defeat of the chromatic dragons three centuries ago, Hrothgar and his companions constructed five powerful dragon masks to control and influence the minds of the great wyrms. While the other masks were scattered and hidden in absolute secrecy, the White Dragon Mask was buried deep within Hrothgar’s empty grave. This repository was chosen to safeguard the artifact against dragon cultists or vengeful dragon followers who might seek to reclaim its power and control the white dragon of the North.

Depiction in Art

The existence and aesthetic of the tomb are historically preserved in the ancient stone carvings found within the central chamber of the Dragon Barrow.
