Axeholm
Axeholm is an ancient, legendary dwarven stronghold nestled within the windswept peaks of the Sword Mountains. Carved into the mountainside by the dwarves of Phandelver’s Pact, Axeholm was once a prideful stronghold renowned for its masterwork craftsmanship and legendary impregnability from the outside. Historically described as standing “like a clenched fist against the mountainside,” the fortress was famed for its grand granite halls, roaring hearths, and masterwork smiths who crafted blades capable of cutting through spell and spirit alike. During the peak of the Pact, the stronghold was celestially represented within the legendary Forge of Spells by a grand constellation in the shape of a large, jewel-bedecked hammer, symbolizing its central role in the alliance.
Architectural Description
Thrust out from the base of a dark gray mountain, the entrance to the dwarven fortress is a dark, fifteen-foot-wide passageway flanked by forty-foot-high bulwarks of smooth, seamless stone. A heavily rusted iron portcullis blocks the gateway. Arrow slits carved into the massive stone bulwarks remain dark, offering no outward hint of occupation to passersby.
History and the Pact of Phandelver
Axeholm’s historical significance came to light through ancient carvings discovered on the walls of the Cragmaw Hideout. Historically, the stronghold served as the sovereign seat of Queen Kima (also referred to as Queen Kim), a dwarven leader remembered for her stubborn pride, love of finely crafted warhammers, and kindness to visitors. Over a millennium ago, during the Age of Arcanum, Axeholm was one of three sovereign seats bound together by The Pact of Phandelver, alongside The Hand of Sehanine (seat of Archmage Larellion) and Highthorn (the summer seat of King Phandelver II, known today as Cragmaw Castle).
This tripartite accord ushered in a golden age of shared magic, labor, and artistry. The Gnomes of the Vale lent their ingenuity to help the Pact create the legendary Forge of Spells. In this era of grand creation, Gond was not a deity but rather a legendary, highly talented dwarven blacksmith who served as the master craftsman of the Pact. Axeholm’s specialized contribution was the legendary metallurgical force behind the alliance; the Activation of Gond’s Smelter within the Forge of Spells fundamentally requires “The Mettle of the Dwarves,” a quality anchored by the craftsmanship of Axeholm.
The Betrayal and Fall of Axeholm
According to the chronicle “The Rise and Fall of the Pact of Phandelver” by the wizard Elminster Aumar, the long peace eventually bred bitter disputes, with rumors of dwarven greed and elven aloofness fracturing the alliance. However, the true catalyst for Axeholm’s tragic abandonment was the treachery of Vyldara Sehahine, daughter of Archmage Larellion. Driven by intense jealousy of her sister Agatha (whom their father favored as the “Moonlit Prodigy”) and a desperate desire to force her father to acknowledge her, Vyldara entered Axeholm as an emissary from the Hand of Sehanine, secretly plotting to claim the fortress for the elves.
Though Queen Kima welcomed her with kindness, Vyldara repaid her by whispering rebellion to sow civil unrest among the clans, culminating in poisoning Queen Kima with a slow, agonizing venom designed to make her name whispered in dread. Imprisoned by the fortress guard, Vyldara was held while the dwarves requested that the Hand collect her for trial.
Preferring death to her father discovering her failure, Vyldara attempted an escape. She slew the guards who stood in her path—including six dwarves who had done nothing but uphold their oaths, staining the stones with blood and turning their spirits into dark shadows. Though she was ultimately cut down, her tragedy did not end. Because her father did not claim her body and Sehanine did not claim her soul, she was abandoned and rose as a cursed banshee. In her torment and wrath, she turned the remaining residents into hostile, undead shadows, forcing the surviving dwarves to abruptly abandon the stronghold within a span of just a few short days.
Learning of her disappearance and under the false impression that she had been kidnapped by the dwarves, Larellion fell into deep despair. This misunderstanding ultimately prompted him to cast the Mythil of Moonshadow to phase the Hand of Sehanine into the Ethereal Plane, bringing Sehanine Moonbow’s divine curse upon the elven tower.
Rediscovery and Cleansing of the Ruins
Long lost to modern maps, the precise location of Axeholm was recently marked by Gotrek, an ancient dwarf berserker from the stronghold who had been petrified for a thousand years. After being rescued from petrification by the adventuring party known as the Magnificent Five (also called the Fantastic Five), Gotrek guided them back to his ancestral home, reluctantly gifting his Berserker Axe to Hope before their journey.
Seeking to free the trapped soul of Vyldara—a task urged by her sister Agatha of Conyberry—the adventurers journeyed to Axeholm alongside Gotrek. They recruited Aja, a fey sorceress temporarily transformed into a talking goat, who used lightning magic to blast open the fortress doors. Inside, the party dispatched hostile shadows before confronting the banshee.
When the paladin Gilmore invoked Agatha’s name to pacify her, Vyldara flew into a rage, unleashing a devastating banshee wail that knocked nearly the entire party unconscious, leaving only Erëvyn and Gotrek standing. After a brief exchange, the recovered party realized she could not be pacified and engaged her in battle. Gilmore finally severed her connection to the mortal coil, allowing her cursed soul to pass on.
Redemption and Final Peace
Upon her defeat, Vyldara’s spectral form flickered between her youth and her banshee rage before gaining clarity. In her final moments, she expressed deep remorse for her jealousy, her poisoning of Queen Kima, and her murder of the guards. She apologized to her father, Larellion, begged his forgiveness, and urged Erëvyn (blood of her blood) to carry the Pact forward in cooperation with his allies. She recognized the “mettle of Dwarves” in Gotrek, the “blood of Kings” in Gilmore, and the “Grace of Selune” in Erëvyn, extending her blessings to them and their Fey allies Nalini and Farwald.
With a final exhale of silvered light, her malice was undone. To Gilmore’s eyes alone, Vyldara’s soul reverted to her childhood form and was gently embraced and shepherded to the afterlife by the Matron of Ravens, wearing her white porcelain mask and cloak of raven feathers.
As the sun shone through into Axeholm after 1,000 years of darkness, streaming in through the various window slits and hidden mirrors in the high ceilings, Erevyn gained an understanding of the key and location that would grant them entry to the Hand of Sehanine. Today, Gotrek hopes to succeed in rebuilding the ancient stronghold.
