The Weave of Magic
The Weave represents the underlying tapestry of magic that binds the Sword Coast, a land deeply etched by blade and spell. Through it, wizards, clerics, and other magic-users shape raw energy into spells, though its flow is not uniform across all locations.
Localized Anomalies: Gnomengarde
The Weave is known to fluctuate in certain geologically or magically unique locations. In the subterranean settlement of Gnomengarde, the magical Weave is highly volatile. Spellcasters visiting the caves quickly realize that the local Weave produces unpredictable side effects for any spells cast, presenting an additional layer of danger for those attempting to channel magical energy within the domain of King Korboz.
Manipulation and Magic-Users
Numerous figures across the Sword Coast manipulate the Weave to achieve legendary or notorious ends:
- Elminster Aumar: Known as the Sage of Waterdeep, he is considered perhaps the most powerful wizard in the land, possessing an unparalleled understanding of the Weave.
- Local Practitioners: Individuals such as the wizard Glasstaff, the old story-teller Farwald, and the fairy Nalini draw upon the Weave to cast spells ranging from Ice Knife and Entangle to memory-altering enchantments and defensive wards.
Arcane Vessels and Artifacts
In addition to conscious spellcasting, the Weave can be bound into physical objects and locations. Legendary devices like the Spell Forge of Wave Echo Cave (activated via Gond’s Smelter) are designed to channel the Weave to craft potent magical items. Lesser vessels of this energy include the Staff of Frost, the Pearl of Power, the Glasstaff, and Bags of Holding.
