The Neverwinter River is a major waterway of the northern Sword Coast, flowing past the prominent city of Neverwinter. Its health is considered vital to the prosperity of the city and the surrounding frontier.

Geothermal Warmth

The river’s most defining feature is that it is fed by underground geothermal springs. This constant influx of heat keeps the river and the surrounding harbor warm, preventing them from freezing even in the depths of winter. It is this unique thermal phenomenon that gives the city of Neverwinter its name, allowing it to stand as a temperate “Jewel of the North” amidst the harsh, frozen wild frontier.

Industry and Conflict

The banks of the Neverwinter River support local logging camps that harvest timber from the surrounding region to support Neverwinter’s heavy trade and construction demands. However, these operations have been plagued by conflict. Local reports from the midwife and miller, Aadabra Gwynn, initially noted that a reclusive druid named Reidoth had been harassing logging operations along the river’s path.

It was later revealed that “Reidoth” is the alias of Esfaloth Nightbreeze, an ancient, fey-touched elf druid and the last of the Naila tribe. Esfaloth has waged a long, isolated war against what he views as the destructive advance of human civilization, which has repeatedly ravaged his ancestral forests.

Ecological Sickness and Restoration

In recent times, the health of the Neverwinter River has severely deteriorated, reflecting a wider sickness in the surrounding land. Travelers have noted that the river flows much slower than it once did. The dense, thorned treeline of the Neverwinter Wood has also begun shifting, creating a near-impassable barrier except directly along the river’s course. During a journey north, adventurers discovered a bloated, unidentified human peasant corpse floating face-down in the sluggish waters; the body was subsequently recovered and given proper funeral rites.

In a profound mystical vision connecting to the memory of the forest, the fairy Nalini witnessed a devastating potential future where the logging camps were silenced, the forest razed to stumps, and the Neverwinter River itself completely choked and dead.

To combat this dark future and restore balance, Nalini used a powerful magical artifact, the Ring of Control Water Elementals, to divert the river’s flow. By redirecting the warm, life-giving waters of the Neverwinter River into the parched and damaged regions of the wood, she was able to drastically accelerate the growth of mushrooms, spores, and ancient flora, helping to heal a half-mile expanse of the sickened landscape.
