Gundren Rockseeker

Gundren Rockseeker is a gruff old dwarf entrepreneur and employer who hired a group of adventurers (later known as “The Magnificent Five” or “The Fantastic Five”) to secure transport for a wagon of provisions and supplies from the city of Neverwinter to the frontier town of Phandalin. This caravan job was meant to supply a planned expedition of immense historical import, as Gundren claimed to have discovered the legendary Wave Echo Cave and its long-lost Spell Forge of Legend.

Origins of the Expedition

A year before his fateful journey, Gundren was overheard in a Neverwinter tavern by the half-elf rogue Erëvyn Sehahine, who was spying on behalf of the Zhentarim. Gundren was speaking with Sildar Hallwinter, a fixer and retired soldier for the Lord’s Alliance, boasting that he had “found something big” and would need supplies and hired guards to escort it to Phandalin. This revelation prompted the Zhentarim to send Erëvyn to infiltrate the caravan to discover what the dwarf had found. Sildar also used his connection to the noble house of Stork to steer his old family friend, Gilmore, toward joining the escort, ultimately assembling the core of the adventuring party.

The Phandalin Contract

Seeking to transport a cart of goods to Barthen’s Provisions in Phandalin, Gundren personally visited a quiet druid grove in Neverwinter to purchase fresh fruits and berries for the journey, where he was spotted by the fairy Nalini. Gundren and Sildar contracted the adventurers in Neverwinter, promising them gold upon safe delivery of the supplies. Eager to reach their destination, Gundren and Sildar rode ahead on horseback. Unbeknownst to them, Nezznar (the mastermind known as “the Spider”) had learned through his spies in Candlekeep that “some foolish Dwarf named Gundren” knew the location of the Forge of Spells, marking him as a high-value target.

The Ambush

Gundren’s journey was violently interrupted along the High Road when turning east toward Phandalin. The adventuring party discovered a grim goblin ambush site where Gundren and Sildar’s horses had been slaughtered. Information extracted from a captured goblin sentry pointed to a goblin named “Klarg” and the nearby Cragmaw Hideout.

The Spider’s Order and Cragmaw Castle

Upon infiltrating the hideout, the adventurers rescued Sildar, but Gundren was gone. They learned that Klarg had received explicit orders from the Spider to intercept “the Dwarf” and steal his map. Through trickery and interrogation, it was revealed that Gundren had been abducted and taken to Cragmaw Castle (historically known as Highthorn, the ancient summer seat of the human King of the Pact of Phandelver). The Spider allowed the goblin and bugbear forces under Klarg and Blarg to occupy the castle, dismissing it as a reign of “broken sticks and stones” while he focused his ambitions on the Underdark below.

Search and Revelations

While the Phandalin town council debated local threats, some skeptical residents dismissed Gundren’s quest as a “damn fool adventure.” However, the Magnificent Five followed his trail. They used an ancient Altar to Ioun in the ruins of Conyberry to discover the exact location of Cragmaw Castle, bringing them closer to uncovering Gundren’s ultimate fate.

Rumors of Death

While held captive in Wave Echo Cave, the gnome academic Dusty was told by the Spider that Gundren was dead—supposedly killed by Blarg, the bugbear leader of Cragmaw Castle (who had self-proclaimed himself “King of Cragmaw”), who then stole his map. It was through this stolen map that the Spider was ultimately able to locate Wave Echo Cave and its fabled Spell Forge of Legend. For a time, this grim account was believed to be Gundren’s tragic end.

Rescued and Reunited

Fortunately, the reports of Gundren’s demise proved to be false. Following the Magnificent Five’s victory over the Spider and the clearing of Wave Echo Cave, the goblin forces at Cragmaw Castle lost their leadership and began to scatter. With the goblins losing interest in keeping their prisoner, Sildar Hallwinter was able to track Gundren down and rescue him from the ruins of the castle.

Though bruised, with alarming bandages on his arm and throat, Gundren survived the ordeal. He returned to Phandalin in time to celebrate Highharvesttide—the last day of summer—sharing drinks and tales with Sildar, Farwald, Gilmore, and the rest of the heroes. Though he deeply regretted not being there to see the Spell Forge of Legend himself, he expressed immense gratitude to the “finders of the Forge of Spells,” calling Nalini a “real fairy” and a “real hero.” Before parting, he went to speak with Aadbra Gwynn, the town midwife and follower of the Wildmother.
