The Peninsula District
The Peninsula District is a key coastal, mostly middle-class sector within the city of Neverwinter, the “Jewel of the North.” Extolled as a quieter but vital part of the city, this district extends beyond the city’s main walls and is characterized as a community of fishermen and bakers. Despite its humble, working-class charm, its most defining and secure municipal feature is the Prisoner’s Isles (also referred to as Prisoners’ Isle, Neverwinter’s Island prison, or the Peninsula Prison), a high-security penal facility connected to the mainland by a single, heavily guarded bridge.
Prisoner’s Isles and the High-Security Cells
Situated on a rugged island just off the coast, the Prisoner’s Isles serve as the primary containment facility for Neverwinter’s most dangerous criminals, rogue spellcasters, and political threats. Under the strict jurisdiction of Neverwinter’s military forces—headed by figures such as Lady Aribeth de Tylmarande, Captain of the Guard and right hand to Lord Nasher Alagondar—the prison stands as a stark, daunting deterrent to lawbreakers.
The security of the Isles is highly prioritized by the city’s leadership. During a tense confrontation on the road near Dragon Barrow, Lady Aribeth dryly noted to independent adventurers that without concrete evidence of a conspiracy, the high-security cells of Prisoners’ Isle “could always use a few more occupants.”
Talis and the Gentleman’s Deal
The high-security cells of the Peninsula District currently hold an individual known as Talis, who is confined within the facility.
The party learned of Talis’s imprisonment through Anthony Calloway, known as “the Gentleman”, the influential half-orc boss of the Cha-Ching Club in the Beggar’s Nest slums. After the party delivered the body of the city’s late comptroller, Patricius, to the Gentleman, he accepted their account of the events and provided the tip regarding Talis’s location in the high-security Peninsula Prison. However, the Gentleman’s information came with a significant catch: he demanded that the party also free his imprisoned associate, Polly, from the same facility, requiring an unbreakable oath as collateral for this dangerous rescue mission.
Urban Context within Neverwinter
The Peninsula District operates alongside several other distinct municipal zones, which are currently undergoing intense wartime preparations against the threat of Luskan:
- The Castle District: The administrative heart of Neverwinter where Lord Nasher Alagondar rules from Castle Never, flanked by newly rebuilt symbols of governance like the admiralty.
- The Blacklake District: An affluent residential sector circling the serene Blacklake, housing the city’s wealthy elite, high-class inns, and Lucian’s Manor—home to Lucian Nightshade, the city’s Spymaster and regional leader of the Zhentarim.
- The Market District: The bustling commercial hub featuring the famous Moonstone Mask Inn, the Trade of Blades (a gathering place for adventurers), and popular taverns like the Pig and the Whistle.
- The Arcanist District: The magical epicenter of Neverwinter, dominated by the Cloaktower, where wizards gather to study and trade in arcane shops and alchemical supplies.
- The Temple District: Home to the Hall of Justice, the serene graveyard of Raven’s Rest, and the sacred Emerald Grove, a natural sanctuary of the Emerald Enclave overseen by the druid Nimiriel Nightbreeze.
- Beggar’s Nest: A sprawling, impoverished slum south of the river that serves as the first stop for southern caravans and is heavily influenced by the local criminal underworld, featuring notable establishments like the Cha-Ching Club.
- The Docks District: A critical maritime center outside the walls, teeming with shipbuilders and seafaring folk, crucial for Neverwinter’s trade and the active mobilization of military supplies.
