The Griffon Knights
The Griffon Knights—frequently referred to as the Griffin Riders or Griffin Knights of the City—serve as Neverwinter’s elite special forces and the premier aerial arm of the city’s military. Mounted upon majestic griffons, this highly respected order represents the vanguard of Neverwinter’s defense, patrolling the wild frontiers of the Sword Coast, safeguarding the skyways, and executing high-risk military operations.
Role and Jurisdiction
The Griffon Knights are tasked with policing the airspace and surrounding territories of Neverwinter, including the perilous borders of the Neverwinter Wood and critical coastal routes. They operate under the direct oversight of Lord Nasher Alagondar’s Small Council, coordinating closely with Lady Aribeth de Tylmarande (sometimes spelled Arabeth), the Captain of the Guard and Lord Nasher’s right hand, as well as Aldis Trueshot, the Master at Arms. Other high-ranking officers, such as Captain Beauregard, coordinate directly with the Knights during city-wide emergencies.
Members of the order are chosen for their exceptional martial prowess, discipline, and unwavering loyalty to the Crown of Neverwinter. Due to their prestige, a sealed letter of recommendation bearing the personal wax seal of a Griffin Knight carries substantial political weight, often granting the bearer direct audience with the Small Council or other high-ranking officials of the Lord’s Alliance.
Wartime Mobilization
During times of peace, retired Knights often transition into diplomatic or administrative roles throughout the Sword Coast. However, as tensions escalated into an open declaration of war between Neverwinter and Luskan, the city began massive wartime preparations.
To bolster their defenses against the looming threat of Luskan’s naval forces and rumored undead fleets, the military issued emergency recall orders. Among those summoned back to active service was Sildar Hallwinter, a celebrated retired soldier, fixer for the Lord’s Alliance, and veteran Griffin Knight. Such recalled veterans were immediately reintegrated into the active ranks of the Griffon Knights, rendering them temporarily unreachable for civilian affairs.
During periods of high alert, the order can be rapidly deployed to respond to domestic threats. For instance, when a chaotic diversion was staged in the Neverwinter sewers with false reports of Luskanites breaching the city walls, the Griffon Knights and Captain Beauregard were immediately mobilized to secure the city’s defense.
Key Engagements
Following the catastrophic events at Dragon Barrow, where the Cult of the Dragon broke the ancient wards of Lady Tanager Alagondar to resurrect the green dragon Villathas (who subsequently fused with the soul of Elira Stork), the Griffon Knights were the first on the scene.
A patrol of three riders—led by Lady Aribeth de Tylmarande herself and accompanied by paladins of Helm’s Hold—spotted the devastation from the air. Landing their mounts in the smoldering crater, they confronted the adventurers present. While Lady Aribeth initially accused the party of grave-robbing and threatened them with imprisonment on Prisoners’ Isle, a sealed letter of recommendation from Sildar Hallwinter softened her stance. Acknowledging the imminent danger of a loose dragon, she offered the party a direct audience with the Small Council of Neverwinter to present their evidence of the dragon cult conspiracy.
